25% of elders in urban India are abused by their sons or daughters-in-law
Why are elders being abandoned?

Changing family structures
The traditional joint family system in India had room for elders who were cared for by multiple generations. Rapid urbanisation has led to the rise of nuclear families, leaving elders isolated, neglected or abandoned.

Poverty & poor healthcare
Inadequate social pensions & healthcare force many elders to rely on families. Deteriorating health of the aging adds to the strain on household finances, often leading to abuse & abandonment - especially of women & widows.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM
No longer useful to the family, 70-year-old Sulochana was taken to Chennai and abandoned a bus stand. After taking on odd jobs to survive, six years later Sulochana was sent to our NGO partner Akshaya Trust by some well-wishers.
HOW THE NGO HELPED
Akshaya Trust conducted a complete medical checkup and discovered a hearing disability, which has been rectified. Despite difficult circumstances, Sulochana is a sweet and kind-hearted person who has formed good relationships with all the residents.
THE SITUATION NOW
This smiling face is a testament of the happiness Sulochana feels, enjoying life with other residents at Akshaya Trust for the last two years.
Provide a homeless elder safe and caring support
Your support will help abandoned senior citizens recover from the trauma of abuse
