Over 20% of the world’s blind live in India

There are an estimated 4.95 million blind persons and 70 million vision-impaired persons in India, out of which 0.24 million are blind children. According to some estimates, India is home to over 20% of the world’s blind population.
According to the 2011 Census, people with disabilities in India, represent 2.21% of the total population. Often, poverty and disability go hand in hand, and for the visually impaired in particular, the struggle is even tougher. The disabled often face cruel stigma in their own homes, pushed into isolation and despair.

What are the challenges faced by the disabled in India?

Social stigma and misconceptions

Many disabled kids are abandoned at birth or face life-long struggle. Blindness, in particular, is often seen as a tragedy. Many people still believe that the disabled can't work, study, or take care of themselves. But with proper training and tools, the physically impaired can do nearly everything sighted people can.

Struggling for the basics in life

"How will a disabled person work?" This biased question keeps many talented individuals unemployed. Even educated candidates face silent rejection—not because they can't perform, but because employers won't try to include them.

Rani

WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM

Hailing from a small village in Bihar's Champaran District, Rani lost her eyesight at just four years old. What followed were years of discrimination and struggle. Yet Rani never gave up on her dream of education and a better life.

HOW THE NGO HELPED

Seeing her determination to succeed and prove the naysayers wrong, The National Association for the Blind, Delhi (NAB Delhi), supported her higher education. Rani secured admission at Miranda House, a prestigious college in Delhi, where she is now pursuing her graduation.

THE SITUATION NOW

Rani believes nothing is impossible. ‘If you have the will, you can achieve anything,’ she says. Today, she balances academics and co-curriculars with determination.
