Blind children are seen as a curse or a burden often neglected, mistreated or abandoned

“People think blind children and blind girls are a burden, they are locked away behind closed doors out of shame and fear of societal judgment. Many parents even think that their blind child carries a curse.”
Far too many families, see a girl child as a burden and if the girl is born blind, it is seen as a curse. Blind children are hidden away, ignored, or worse told they can’t succeed. When seen at all, it’s only as a burden and not as promise. But it does not have to be this way.

Challenges faced by disabled people in India

Robbed of possibility

Blind children are often born into loving families, but when the disability is revealed the narrative changes: “Who will care for her or him? Who will marry them? How will they earn?” They are sidelined before their potential can even begin.

Thrown away

When neglect, stigma or hardship deepen, many blind children and girls are abandoned in railway stations, hospitals, faraway shelters, or simply left to fend for themselves. They become invisible to society and powerless in their own lives.

Help us support blind children and young adults with shelter and care

When you donate monthly, you aren’t just giving money, you’re giving stability, continuity, and hope. You’re saying: I believe this blind child has a future. Monthly donors make sure the shelter roof stays strong, Braille books, computers, and mobility aids are available, and the teachers and counsellors who guide these girls can continue their work.
