Snehankur… a loving home for abandoned infants
Our NGO partner Snehalaya runs an adoption centre- Snehankur. During the lockdown, they have seen a record increase in the number of babies abandoned.
As India was battling the deadly second wave of COVID, prematurely born Rani was fighting for each breath. Born out of wedlock, she was also severely underweight (1 kg). Rescued by Snehalaya, Rani is now one of the many children who have been abandoned during the devastating times of COVID-19.
With all adoptions currently on hold, the centre is already over capacity with 60 babies awaiting adoption. The team is dedicated and is managing but, with no additional staff being hired, their already limited resources are becoming overstretched.
During the COVID-19 lockdown period, most maternity facilities have also been closed and women and girls are being forced to deliver their babies at home. They are also unable to access essential pre and postnatal services.
In normal circumstances, women and girls with unwanted pregnancies are referred to their centre by maternity professionals where they receive the support to safely deliver and relinquish their babies. With more girls and women giving birth behind the closed doors of lockdown, Snehalaya has been finding it much harder to find those in need of their services.
Solution
Snehalaya is providing medical and nutritional support to the babies at their centre along with providing shelter. They require Rs 66,000 per baby and women to ensure their healthy growth. This cost includes:
Along with these infants, Snehalaya also takes care of abandoned pregnant girls and women who need medical and nutritional care. Inhabiting 70 such women that include minor pregnant girls and rape survivors, the organisation takes care of:
A little love, a lot of hope
Your donation can help abandoned babies and pregnant women have a fighting chance at a healthy life. You can help them get their required vaccinations, nutritional needs and also a safe shelter to survive. Hit by a pandemic, estranged from their families- they deserve all the love and support.
Come forward and donate how much ever you can. They need you, they need us.
UPDATE: Last year, with your generous contributions we were able to raise a total of Rs 75 lakhs for Snehalaya. It helped them support the abandoned babies as they awaited their forever families during the first wave of COVID-19. The second deadly wave was no different for the adoption centre. With the increase in the number of abandoned babies and strict adoption policies, they are again running above capacity and struggling to support more than 60 abandoned children and 70 mothers in need. They are in need of Rs 85+ Lakh to ensure healthcare, nutrition and shelter for all those under their care. The fundraiser target is currently at Rs 1.7 Crore. Your continued support and donation can help Snehankur provide adequate care to its beneficiaries.
