Story

The pandemic has dealt a cruel blow to street animals too.

Our NGO partner World For All has rescued 350 dogs in the lockdown period. Attended almost 2000 street cases of injuries, admitted 900 new animals and has been feeding 700 animals on the streets of Mumbai.

“Since there were no people on the roads during the lockdown, injured animals were reported to us much later. That’s the reason why we have received severely injured cases,” said Taronish Bulsara, Co-founder, World For All.

World for All began in the year 2009-10, while Taronish and his partner were still in college. The vision behind the organisation was to provide a platform for adoptions of Indian breeds of dogs and cats and also discourage unethical breeding.

Today, World For All is strong in its aim to create a better world for animals, where people of Mumbai and the street animals can coexist peacefully.

They are running a massive feeding program and serving 100kgs of food per day to the animals on the streets of Mumbai.

“We started our feeding program to cater to the needs of the starving animals through the city during the lockdown. But it has so many more positives. Animals, who previously ran away when they saw the ambulances coming because they were scared to be medicated now relate to the ambulances as a source of food. They come happily to have their meals, because of which we are now able to identify animals in medical need easily and get them into the vans much more willingly,” said Taronish.

Solution

To help street animals survive the pandemic, along with food, World For All provides emergency medical care to injured animals and also shelter and adoption facilities.

How is the feeding done?

Fresh food that is cooked at the Canine centre of WFA’s Post Operative facility is cooled down and packed into large containers that are then loaded into one of their ambulances which has been specifically designated for the said program. The van is then taken out by the relevant feeding staff for a five and a half hours slow drive on the streets.

  •  The staff get off the van at every nook and corner and personally feed cats and dogs on the street. After cleaning up behind the animal they move on to the next spot.
  • The van also stops at common areas within each suburb where trusted, voluntary street feeders wait with empty buckets, WFA volunteers fill their buckets with freshly cooked food and they then go feeding in chawls and small lanes where the ambulance cannot go in.
  • They have also been giving some amounts of raw materials to certain feeders who cook and feed in certain few areas.
  • Since they do not have a van in Raighad District their staff carry kgs of food into the villages and go feeding on foot.
