Story

Deep in patriarchal India, a little village celebrates its girl children.

In that village, girls wear beautiful dresses and make up.

In that village, girls are the breadwinners.

In that village, all girls are ‘employed’.

In that village, men mostly sit back and live off the earnings of their girls.

In that village, girls have no dreams.

They are born with a destiny bestowed upon them by centuries of tradition.

They are all born to become commercial sex workers.

Intergenerational prostitution in many tribal communities is an age-old practice. As soon as young girls hit puberty, their fathers, brothers and uncles are busy pimping them out in the name of tradition so the family can put food on their plates.

iPartner India started their intervention in the Tonk district of Rajasthan in 2018 with the Nat community after getting reports that a high percentage of girls who were rescued from brothels in Mumbai belonged to this area.

Lakshmi was one such girl who was sent to Mumbai to become a commercial sex worker at the age of 14. She had dreams of studying further but succumbed to family pressure.

Lakshmi is now 35 years old and will soon have to retire and return to her village to lead a lonely solitary life in an outhouse. She now fears for her niece Roopa, who is about to turn 13 and will also be forced to enter sex work.

With the nationwide lockdown due to COVID-19, many young girls are now facing the same risk within their villages due to the loss of livelihoods. Their parents who worked as daily wage labourers before the lockdown are now also under pressure to survive and have started putting the burden on these girls to earn through commercial sex work.

The solution

In a bid to save innocent young girls from this fate, our partner NGO iPartner India will send the brightest and most vulnerable girls to good residential schools in a big city far away from their homes, so they can complete their education and break free from this shocking practice. Supporting their education in the village itself would put them at constant risk, with the pimps lurking around.

This fundraiser is to support 20 such young girls with admission and course fees for a year.

It takes ₹1,72,500 to educate a girl, taking care the academic, accommodation and other required costs. The target of this fundraiser includes the costs to educating 20 girls and setup, administrative and promotional costs of making this fundraiser successful.

Impact

  • The girls will be saved from inter-generational forced sex work and be able to decide their career path.
  • They will become role models in the Nat community where this practice is prevalent and inspire other girls to follow their dreams.
  • Child trafficking and sex trafficking of girls will reduce significantly in the area as people will be more aware of child rights and their exploitation.

Donate now and secure the future of 20 vulnerable young girls.
