Help Charu Hear Again – A Mother’s Fight to Restore Her Daughter’s Future

Santosh Dagar is a mother who has endured unimaginable loss. In 2019, a tragic road accident took away her husband — the sole earning member of the family. Overnight, she was left to raise her children alone.

Just as the family was trying to rebuild their lives, tragedy struck again. In 2023, her 13-year-old son lost his life to Tuberculosis (TB). During the same time, her elder daughter Charu was also battling TB. 

“I did everything for my children’s treatment — doctors, tests, medicines, prayers. Every night I prayed to God, ‘Please make my child well.’ But perhaps this pain was also written in my destiny.”

After having already lost her son, Santosh continued fighting for Charu’s life. Months of aggressive treatment and heavy-dose injections finally cured Charu of TB. For a brief moment, it felt like a miracle - but the medication left behind a devastating side effect: she completely lost her hearing.

Today, 25-year-old Charu cannot hear a single sound. For a mother, watching her child unable to hear even a single sound is a silent agony.

“After that difficult time, I saw both fear and hope in my daughters’ eyes. At that moment, I told myself, ‘I have to live — only for my daughters.’”

Despite these hardships, Charu showed remarkable courage. She completed her Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC) and dreams of becoming independent and supporting her mother and younger sister. However, profound hearing loss has made employment nearly impossible.

After multiple consultations and unsuccessful attempts with hearing aids, specialists have confirmed that Charu’s only hope is Cochlear Implant Surgery, which can restore her ability to hear and give her a chance at a normal, independent life.

The total estimated cost of the surgery and related medical care is approximately ₹50 lakh — an amount far beyond the reach of a mother who survives through sewing and embroidery work. The family’s savings were exhausted in medical treatments and past tragedies.

संतोष डागर एक ऐसी माँ हैं जिन्होंने जीवन में अकल्पनीय दुख सहा है। वर्ष 2019 में एक दुखद सड़क दुर्घटना में उनके पति का निधन हो गया — वे ही परिवारके एकमात्र कमाने वाले सदस्य थे। एक ही पल में संतोष को अपने बच्चों की परवरिश अकेले करने की जिम्मेदारी उठानी पड़ी।

जब परिवार धीरे-धीरे अपने जीवन को फिर से संभालने की कोशिश कर रहा था, तभी एक और त्रासदी ने दस्तक दी। वर्ष 2023 में उनके 13 वर्षीय बेटे कीमृत्यु तपेदिक (टीबी) के कारण हो गई। उसी समय उनकी बड़ी बेटी चारु भी टीबी से जूझ रही थी।

“मैंने अपने बच्चों के इलाज के लिए सब कुछ किया — डॉक्टर, जाँच, दवाइयाँ और दुआएँ। हर रात मैं भगवान से प्रार्थना करती थी, ‘मेरे बच्चे को ठीक करदो।’ लेकिन शायद यह दर्द भी मेरी किस्मत में लिखा था।”

अपने बेटे को खोने के बाद भी संतोष ने चारु के लिए संघर्ष जारी रखा। कई महीनों तक चले कठिन इलाज और भारी मात्रा में दिए गए इंजेक्शनों के बादआखिरकार चारु टीबी से ठीक हो गई। कुछ समय के लिए ऐसा लगा जैसे कोई चमत्कार हो गया हो — लेकिन दवाइयों ने एक गंभीर दुष्प्रभाव छोड़ दिया: चारु की सुनने की शक्ति पूरी तरह चली गई।

आज 25 वर्ष की चारु एक भी आवाज़ नहीं सुन सकती। एक माँ के लिए यह देखना कि उसकी बेटी एक भी ध्वनि नहीं सुन पा रही है, बेहद पीड़ादायक है।

“उस कठिन समय के बाद मैंने अपनी बेटियों की आँखों में डर और उम्मीद दोनों देखे। उसी क्षण मैंने खुद से कहा — ‘मुझे जीना होगा, सिर्फ अपनी बेटियों केलिए।’”

इन कठिन परिस्थितियों के बावजूद चारु ने अद्भुत साहस दिखाया। उसने बैचलर ऑफ जर्नलिज़्म एंड मास कम्युनिकेशन (BJMC) की पढ़ाई पूरी की हैऔर वह आत्मनिर्भर बनकर अपनी माँ और छोटी बहन का सहारा बनना चाहती है। लेकिन गंभीर श्रवण हानि के कारण उसके लिए नौकरी पाना लगभग असंभवहो गया है।

कई विशेषज्ञों से सलाह लेने और हियरिंग एड का उपयोग करने के बावजूद कोई लाभ नहीं हुआ। अब डॉक्टरों ने स्पष्ट रूप से बताया है कि चारु केलिए कोक्लियर इम्प्लांट सर्जरी ही एकमात्र उम्मीद है, जो उसकी सुनने की क्षमता वापस ला सकती है और उसे एक सामान्य, स्वतंत्र जीवन जीने का अवसरदे सकती है।

इस सर्जरी और संबंधित चिकित्सा उपचार की कुल अनुमानित लागत लगभग ₹50 लाख है — जो एक ऐसी माँ के लिए असंभव राशि है जो सिलाई-कढ़ाईका काम करके किसी तरह अपना घर चलाती हैं। परिवार की सारी बचत पहले ही इलाज और पिछले दुखद घटनाओं में खर्च हो चुकी है।
