Kidpower India, for the last 5 years is working in the slums of Visakhapatnam to prevent child labor and for women empowerment. On the request of women/girls in the slum, we started a 1-year vocational tailoring course on the 1st of February 2019 in Eklavya Colony. Around 20 women/girls have attended the course and have successfully finished the course. The main work of the women/girls in the slum is to sell brooms, rag-picking, collecting recyclable scrap from the garbage, and reselling the same. By starting the vocational course, our goal is to provide a good skill to the woman/ girls which will help them to start home-based tailoring works.
Given the current covid19 situation, rag picking has become less attractive. They have not worked for the last few months. Their profession of rag-picking is a difficult job with health hazards and social discrimination. The open bin garbage through which they have to work is a serious health hazard. Though the women/girls who attended the course have excellent skills but do not have the investment to take up home-based tailoring works.
The woman/girls who have successfully finished the 1-year course will be provided sewing machines, material, additional training/ mentoring, and support to take up orders. The women/ girls will be able to start their own tailoring business from home and earn a daily income that can provide food and basic necessities for the whole family.
The different components of the program are:
The women/girls are talented and if provided the right kind of support they will be able to take home based tailoring. They will be able to earn more money and support their family. This will be a motivation for other women/girls in the community.

Many women/girls are showing interest to stitch clothes from home. E.g.: they charge Rs.150 for a blouse for which usually a tailor charges Rs 400. This is providing them with a reasonable income and at the same time can practice and increase their tailoring skills. However, the women said they do not have the money to buy a sewing machine. So, Kidpower has purchased machines for 8 women/girls to buy sewing machines. The following women have got new sewing machines: 1)Asanala Aparna 2) Pendra Gowri 3) Pendra Pydi and 4) Bhavani 5)Kondamma 6) Bangaramma 7)V. Lakshmi and 8)V. Pratheeka.
The women and girls have worked very hard and they have successfully finished the 15 months course. They now know how to stitch the different types of women/girls’ wear, kids’ wear, table cloth and curtains, etc. The course has helped them to develop skills they can use to build a better future for their families and communities. 8 women/ girls were provided new sewing machines. They were also provided with new material. They have already started stitching for their families and neighbours. Some of them are already taking up work orders and getting income. On the review of the course, we believe that tailoring can be an alternative respectable and viable livelihood. Married women are preferring to go for home-based tailoring rather than work under a tailor. This gives them time to spend at home and take care of the children. Thereby indirectly contributing to child welfare and education. Young girls, on the other hand, prefer to work under established tailors and further enhance their skills. We believe that the TAILORING PROGRAM is successful and has benefits for the women and the community are visible. Tailoring skills help improve their household capacity, autonomy and income. Tailoring can become a sustainable livelihood for women/girls in near future.
It is to be also noted that the main livelihood of the women/girls, who attended the course, is rag picking, scrap collection, brooms selling on the streets and hair collection. Many women/ girls in the community are trying to change their lives to work with more dignity and protect their health. As they are less educated the options for different work are few. TAILORING PROGRAM provides a good alternative for some women/girls interested in this creative field.
