Education For Street Children in Daycare Centres

The day care shelters run by Calcutta Social Project, Kolkata (An NGO looking after street children) are safe places for street children to spend the day while their parents may be away at work. They are clean places where the kids can eat, bathe and spend the day safely.

These are children from violent and emotionally disturbed homes with obvious behavioural issues. They frequently have been physically abused, are prone to antisocial activities.

While they are at the centre, besides being physically looked after, they need to be taught certain life skills, value education and functional academics, with the objective that with enhanced learning outcomes, these children may be able to navigate formal schooling in future.  

weCan Learning Resource Institute is happy to offer its services in order to address basic educational needs of these 150 children in the 6 centres run by Calcutta Social Project- in alignment with our vision and mission of – Education for all, raising the bar, Bridging the gaps’

Program Strategy:

• Base level testing for each child
• Goal setting for each child through a Competency Ladder
• Weekly contact programmes and sessions with the CSP care givers, community mobilizers and supervisors wherein they will

*        Learn to use the tools and strategies for teaching and assessment systems provided by weCan.

*        Be able to provide basic academic skills like reading, writing, listening, speaking, comprehension and numeracy.

*        Impart life skills like safety and hygiene.

*        Learn to implement multi-level teaching.

*        Trained to create teaching learning material suited for their needs.

*        Be sensitized to handle emotions, stress and anxiety in children.

*        Be empowered to create a joyful and productive learning environment within their domain.

Review and Reporting System:

• Weekly visit to each centre by the weCan coordinator.
• Observation and recording through appropriate tools and checklists
• Course correction through discussion during the weekly contact programme.
• Detailed quarterly report projecting the progress of each child and each centre

Objective- Enhancing Learning Outcomes

• To reach quality academic intervention to children from under-privileged backgrounds, who are not yet a part of a formal education system.
• To provide a stepping stone for children who may be able to be a part of a formal school system in future.
• To develop basic life skills through functional academics for those who may not be a part of a formal school system.
•  The help nurture confidence and self-esteem regardless of their background and socio-economic status.
• To raise aspirations and make them dream of a life beyond.
• To motivate parents to take their education seriously.
• To empower care-givers and supervisors to be able to manage more productive and wholesome centres for all round development of the children under their care.
