Our understanding, built over the years, has enabled us to recognise that any growing city’s ecological sustainability is deeply connected to the state of its urban wildlife population, present in not only its lakes, parks, fields and trees, but also in the city’s buildings, roads, sewage lines and waste management centres. Natural green cover proliferation, vector and disease control, the impact on soil - all have connections to urban wildlife, much like in a wholly natural ecosystem.
The ‘Garden City of India’ has lost one-fourth of its green cover and one-third of its lakes in recent decades. With the current trend of depleting groundwater, our city as we know will soon turn out to be a mirage from the past. There is a dire need to conserve the urban wildlife and nature of our city!
While the initial purview of the organization was to create awareness on the rights and needs of animals, both domestic and wild, PFA then took a conscious decision to focus on the rescue and rehabilitation of injured or orphaned or displaced urban wildlife. PFA, along with the aid of conscientious citizens in and around Bangalore, is making a conscious effort to conserve the city’s urban wildlife.
From conducting awareness drives in schools, colleges, offices and communities, to initiating special programs, such as replenishing the water sources in fringe forests, PFA has been instrumental in the conservation of environment and wildlife in and around Bangalore over the years. As of July 2019, PFA has visited more than 5000 Schools, educating more than 2 lakh students, on Environmental Conservation & Protection of Wildlife.
PFA has been involved in issues that have crossed various boundaries over the years. The illegal slaughter of camels, ostrich farming, the disbanding of an elephant training camp, halting the mobile zoo display of animals in Mangalore, enabling confiscations of illegal domestication and commercial exploitation of various protected animals including macaques, parakeets, loris, jackals and snakes.
Since its inception in 1999, PfA has rescued over 25,000 wildlife animals and counting, that envelops around 200 species. It includes 11241 birds, 3964 mammals, and 9937 reptiles. There are endangered, migratory and endemic animals among the species rescued by PFA. 4 in every 5 animals rescued has been successfully released back into the wild.
We seek funds, sponsorships and support donations from citizens and businesses who hold a desire to protecting the natural wealth we have in our rapidly growing city. We do not have any government body or independent agency supporting us, and rely solely on those who believe in our work, the income from our pet cemetery and independent project sponsors.
