As the crisis around the Covid-19 pandemic grows, the livelihoods of a large number of families surviving on daily wages have been shaken up. From those working at construction sites, shops, restaurants, delivery staff and local transport systems, the daily wager community has seen their only source of income come to a screeching halt, leaving them with no means to earn themselves a meal during the days of lockdown.
We have initiated the ‘Feed the Daily Wager’ project to provide food support to such families. Our aim is to help them have a reliable supply of meals in the absence of employment opportunities.
We are distributing ration kits with food grains (wheat flour or rice) and pulses to daily wager families. Each kit can last a family of 5 for a week and costs us Rs.500. We have partnered with local NGOs, District Administration, and volunteers across multiple cities to help us identify families in need and ensure responsible distribution while ensuring social distancing guidelines.
Our goal is to distribute 10 lakh kits in India which will cost us a total of Rs.50 crore. Of this we have already collected Rs.28 crore. We have distributed 430,976 kits so far and are hoping to support 5 lakh more families in the days to come.
