Post Covid, we had to close down our job-linked residential training centres for less educated youth with disabilities Pan-India. Young men and women with locomotor disabilities, speech and hearing impaired, low vision and visual impaired enrol in these centres. These are located where the real need of India is - poor states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tier 2 towns like Nagpur and Lucknow , and difficult geographies like the north-east.
In Covid times, vulnerable youth like disabled get left behind in most support schemes. As our youth left the training centres, they repeatedly told us they wanted to continue these job linked trainings. With their parents loosing their wages as marginal farmers and petty daily workers, there was a pressing need to get a job and earn money, not just to be independent but support their families.
Listening to them, we strongly felt we could not abandon our challenging but life- changing livelihood work for the disabled . We had to innovate, use technology and continue our job-linked skillings. The challenges were many-how to work with disabled in remote areas where connectivity is poor and how to identify jobs in companies.
Youth4Jobs is launching a new skilling product for youth with disabilities – Y4J Online.
Stakeholders like youth, companies were involved in the design of the product. Our team had discussions with the youth on duration, timings of trainings. Technology choices had to be made as rural areas have poor connectivity and low bandwidth. To ensure quality, we wanted to monitor attendance . Zoom, facebook private was chosen as platforms to launch the online skilling product. Companies were contacted to give guest lectures and content, wherever necessary.
Test runs showed tremendous patience was required as youth only understood whatsapp and messages. The trainings are for 3 hours each in two batches for 21 days. There are separate batches for speech and hearing impaired youth. The response to the pan India online trainings has been overwhelming. Youth from remote villages enrolled. They struggled with multiple issues but were keen to be digitally savvy in isolation times. Girls enrolled from safety of their homes.
New industry sectors are being mapped simultaneously like e-commerce, manufacturing and the large msme sector. Companies posted their job vacancies first to Y4J as many of them were guest lecturers .
1000 young men and women with disabilities, many from remote villages, will get trained and be linked to sustainable livelihoods
30% will be the most vulnerable, girls with disabilities
MSMes will be sensitised with the “Each one take One” slogan for local jobs.
Helps country achieve SDG goals and achieve its demographic dividend
Alumni in jobs will become confident, have self esteem and support their families in crisis times.
Y4J ALUMNI WRITES:
I don’t know if there is a God or note. But there are certain people like you and Youth4 Jobs which are doing good deeds for the differently abled persons by approaching them and help them to become independent.
Hats off to your great Job. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
