Story

Meet Rangtuli Group- a vibrant set of young adolescent girls from a hamlet named Kolarkhal within Kheyadah II Gram Panchayat. These girls have been working as peer educators/leaders since early 2021 on various aspects of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) based education to lead changes from within and lead changes in the schools, village and communities. Riya, Satarupa, Sumana, Barsha, Sudeshna, Trisha, Ankita and many more members of this group have learnt to advocate for their own SRHR through holding workshops at community and panchayat levels. They have represented their work and advocated for the need of such intervention at various conferences. Theirs is a journey from shy, introvert and underconfident adolescents to powerful, motivated and confident changemakers.

Working with adolescents and young adults is an approach that has been proved to have a dominos effect when it comes to social change. In our experience of working with young people, we have seen that when you empower young people with knowledge about their bodies, bodily autonomy and well-being, they are able to make informed choices not just about their bodies but also their lives in general. They are able to prioritise their safety and take ownership of Their Lives. This contirbutes their holistic development and thereby reducing gender inequality.

If we see a few national figures when it comes to various realities pertaining to gender and SRHR:

  • 90% perpetrators are known to the abused in cases of Child Sexual Abuse
  • 57% boys think Violence is Justified and 50% of them are likely to develop tendency of physical violence
  • 27% girls get married between 15-19 years which roughly translates to millions of Teenage Pregnancies
  • 23% girls annually drop out of School at the onset of Menstruation owing to the lack of Knowledge and Infrastructure
  • 13% pregnant women and girls die as a result of Unsafe Abortions
