Rise Above Waste: Educate a Wastepicker Child, Empower a Nation

Wastepicker children, as young as four, are pushed alongside their parents into the harsh conditions of scavenging amidst toxic waste with bare hands and feet. These children, especially girls, face pressure to drop out of school, early marriage, exposure to domestic abuse, and a severe lack of employment opportunities - their futures snatched away before they even begin. Despite their right to education, they lack the resources and family support to stay and excel in school, keeping them in the cycle of waste picking and poverty.

Education is their right, yet it remains a distant dream.

We cannot expect a ‘better tomorrow’ unless we provide basic needs and dignity to these children and empower them to become change agents. They must access education and develop skills tailored to their aspirations, as they chart their unique paths.

Chintan’s GenNext Program: A bridge towards hope

We don't just envision a different future; we're building it.

Determined to ensure wastepicker children move away from these hazardous conditions, Chintan is guiding waste-picking children from dumpsites to classrooms, through its GenNext programme. The programme identifies waste-picking children and introduces them to study support classes, digital literacy, STEM education and leadership training, at Chintan’s 27 learning centres across Delhi NCR including a digital lab. The students are also supported with school enrollment, laying the foundation stone for their journey towards mainstream education. Nearly two-thirds of our students are girls, breaking gender barriers one class at a time.

Support Chintan to let the learning continue. Our learning centres need your support to continue providing quality education.

Impact

Over 15 years, Chintan has transformed more than 10,000 lives from waste-picking to worlds of opportunity, education, and empowerment. Our focus on education, especially for girls, equips them to build better futures, support their families, and contribute positively to society. Our alumni are testaments to what's possible: from waste pickers to teachers, entrepreneurs, nurses, and even fashion designers. They are the living proof of the change your contribution makes.
