Supporting 2000 Vulnerable families with COVID relief.

Situation Assessment

The COVID crisis has led to nationwide distress due to immediate challenges with the delivery of healthcare services, and due to the loss of jobs and livelihoods of vulnerable communities, especially returning migrant laborers, impacting their dependent families.

In the context of eastern Uttar Pradesh, where Jagriti is working, the distress is pronounced because of high influx of the migrant labourers, who have lost their jobs in other states. Their dependent family members, especially women, who were employed with local informal enterprises, are also losing their livelihoods because of the slow collapse of these enterprises.

The local district administration so far is focused on providing immediate relief in the form of food and ration to the vulnerable communities, and ensuring lockdown and social distancing is followed. The Govt has announced to transfer INR 1000-5000 to construction workers, and additionally, the State Govt is supporting the informal sector laborers with INR 1000.

 Beneficiaries Identification

 Target – 2000 families impacted by COVID

 Approach:

 1. Jagriti is creating a list of 50 Gram Panchayats (GPs) in the Deoria district where Jagriti has a strong connection with the Gram Pradhan.

2. Within these 50 GPs, the target is to identify 40-50 families that are adversely impacted by the COVID crisis. The families of migrant workers and daily wage workers will be given preference.

3. Jagriti has already been distributing ration/food kits among the needy families (around 170 families covered). We will include these families under this program.

Response Action (Healthcare & Food) –

1.     Distribution of ration / hygiene kits for 15 days, which includes 6 masks, 5 hand soaps, 2 kg potato, 2 kg onion, 5 kg flour, 5 kg rice, 1 kg dal, 1-litre mustard oil, 1 kg sugar, and spices

•    Direct distribution of the kits through our volunteers
•  Ensuring that the families get the kits from the Gram Pradhaan as per the direction of the Government. Currently the families are getting the ration kit for 1 month

2.     Supporting the families with the documentation and opening of bank accounts so that they received these benefits

3.     Ensuring Govt entitlements reach to the 2000 families

•  Current packages for COVID like financial aid to the construction workers, food grains, etc.
•  Other schemes for BPL families like Ujjawala
•  Schemes for Women like Jan DhanYojna, Credit to Self-Help groups
• Fund release for pending wages under MGNREGA
• Benefits to farmers under PM KisanYojna

4.     Creating a database of migrant workers so as to support those who decide to stay back with different livelihood options

•   Mapping the migrant workers geographically
•  Listing down livelihood opportunities and relevant government schemes
•  Bringing other stakeholders on board like NBFCs, Banks, etc.
•   Support to the livelihood enterprises in form of market and mentorship
