On the edge of the Indo–Nepal border lies Kisun Nagar, a small Tharu village in Uttar Pradesh, where children grow up with no access to quality education from the start.
What if less than ₹140 a day could give a child a year of opportunity?
This Daan Utsav, you can sponsor a child's learning journey at Vidya Vriksh Gurukul for ₹50,000 a year—helping provide the teachers, learning experiences and safe space children need to discover what they are capable of.
Kisun Nagar is home to around 50 families. Children here grow up speaking their own local tribal language, surrounded by a rich culture and close-knit community. But their geographic isolation also means that many opportunities and resources available elsewhere simply don't reach the village.
For a child growing up here, the education journey begins with a void.
There is no preschool in the village. For children under six, there is no local place to learn, play and prepare for school. For Class 1, families have limited schooling options nearby. And beyond Class 8, continuing education often means travelling nearly 10 km from home every day.
By the time children reach the higher grades, many have fallen behind. Our community research found that 7 in 10 young people cannot read or do maths at their grade level, and ~1 in 3 drop out by Class 9. But behind every number is a child.
An 18-year-old from the village once told us about how he only started understanding what his teacher was saying in grade 5 because his teacher spoke Hindi and not Tharu. For young people here, the challenge isn't lack of ambition. It is access.
So we ask:
Does being born in a small, remote village mean you should have fewer opportunities to learn?
We don't think it should.
That is why we built Vidya Vriksh Gurukul (VVG).
VVG is a community-run learning centre created to bring quality learning closer to village children. It is a safe, joyful space where children can build foundational skills, develop confidence, ask questions, explore their interests and discover what they are capable of.
We train young people from the local community to become teachers, because access isn't only about having a building—it is about having people who understand the children, their language, their context and their community.
We are building the kind of learning environment we believe will allow every child in Kisun Nagar to dream big and take that dream as far as they can.
Because where a child is born should not decide what they get to dream about—or how far they can go.
Our vision: A future where every rural child thrives and village communities flourish.
This Daan Utsav, you can help make that possible for a child.
