Learning in the Living Sundarbans: Making Education accessible in Sunderbans

The Sundarbans is a landscape of remarkable ecological relationships. Its mangrove forests, tidal

waterways, biodiversity, and seasonal conditions shape the environment in which people live and

work.

For children growing up here, the relationship between people and their surroundings is part of

everyday experience.

At Katakhali Swapnopuron Welfare Society, we believe that education can help children explore

these connections while building the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue their aspirations.

Across our schools, we work towards making quality English-medium education accessible to

children, with a special focus on girls’ education.

We see education as more than academic instruction. It also includes the opportunity to investigate

scientific questions, understand the ecosystem around us, express ideas through art and music,

engage with history and culture, and develop independent ways of thinking.

We recognise that children’s educational experiences are shaped by their wider circumstances. In

the Sundarbans, local livelihoods, seasonal work, and migration can influence family routines and

the support available to children at different times of the year.

Our work seeks to provide a consistent learning environment while recognising the varied

experiences of the children who study with us.

We want students to have opportunities to understand the place they call home without limiting

their aspirations to it. We want them to explore the wider world without losing their connection to

their own surroundings, experiences, and cultural knowledge.

To support this vision, we are raising funds for the educational, nutritional, scientific, and creative
