<ul><li>Among the essential staff that are out on roads daily are people who maintain the hygiene of urban and rural settlements: sanitation workers.</li><li>Sanitation workers, who collect garbage, clean sewers, and decant septic tanks play a crucial role in not only in preventing the spread of diseases but also in maintaining the basic services during these crucial times: and unfortunately, these workers often do not have basic protective equipment to protect themselves from the hazardous materials they come into contact with on a daily basis. These three districts have nearly 12,000 sanitation workers, most of whom do not have access to personal safety equipment.</li><li>The importance of handwashing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is well-established. However, there remain households and containment facilities in these districts that have limited or no infrastructure to enable handwashing.</li><li>While the government has taken significant initiative in disseminating information, there is a need for sustained messaging in urban slums on preventive measures, maintaining social distancing and hygienic practices while using community toilet, following hygienic practices at home and streets (Slums are densely populated), solid waste management, potable water usage (maintaining social distancing while collecting water from public stand post), usage and disposal of masks etc.</li></ul>

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Institute established in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India in the year 2008. WASH Institute is a registered non-profit organization, providing technical, training, research and development services to a wide range of stakeholders - Governments, Industry, DFIs, philanthropic organizations, and other NGOs. WASH Institute is dedicated to providing practical solutions to a wide range of water, sanitation, hygiene and environmental issues. WASH Institute operates from 14 locations spread across nine states and one Union Territory in India. The organization supports the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (rechristened Ministry of Jal Shakti). WASH Institute has a multi-disciplinary team of over 140 employees with expertise in engineering, urban planning, policy and business models, capacity building, communication and behaviour change.VisionA world in which all communities have access to safe, protected and sustainable drinking water and sanitation services, with improved hygiene practices.MissionWASH Institute’s prime focus is to facilitate development of skilled professionals in the water and sanitation sector with a community perspective to address the growing need of trained human resources in the sector.Community WASH ProgramWASH Institute has been providing access to improved WASH services to marginalized communities and schools by implementing grassroots level CSR projects across 14 locations in nine states and one Union Territory, namely Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, West Bengal, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Delhi. So far WASH Institute has directed impacted over 2.5 lakh school children and community members. Key donors of WASH Institute are BMGF, USAID, ITC Limited, HCL Foundation, NSE Foundation, BPCL &amp; ONGC. The organization is also working with Department of Water Supply &amp; Sanitation, Punjab to support project implementation for social and communication activities for a multi village surface water project in Gurdaspur &amp; Amritsar, Punjab.WASH Institute works in two districts identified among the most underdeveloped districts in the country. The interventions planned by WASH Institute bring about measurable changes in district development indicators. These interventions span water conservation, water body rejuvenation, basic sanitation provision, solid and liquid waste management and fecal sludge management. WASH Institute supports villages and sub-districts in implementing the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) by helping build toilets in schools and communities. This work is further enhanced by then implementing solid and liquid waste collection, transport, treatment and disposal/reuse practices in those communities. Support ranges from planning and implementation supervision to capacity building and hand holding of district functionaries.Capacity Building and Applied Research ProgramWASH Institute as a former Key Resource Center of Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti that provided skill and capacity building trainings to over 2000 Government Officials across the country. WASH Institute regularly undertakes training programs for government functionaries (technical staff, decision makers, elected representatives, policy makers), frontline community workers (Swachhta Doots, volunteers supporting cleanliness efforts) and sanitation workers (masons, operators). The training programs cover the entire spectrum - water security and water management, integrated water supply, water quality, water &amp; sanitation during emergency, ECOSAN, Citywide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS), Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) and Decentralized Wastewater Management. So far WASH Institute has trained more than 13,000 professionals across the country - 1520 Engineers/Govt. officials, 3500 NGO/INGO professionals, over 8000 Master Masons – as well as 6,000 school children.WASH Institute, at its formal course center, conducts various Government approved courses on Sanitation, such as, a One Year PG Diploma in Sanitary Inspector’s Course and Two Year Diploma in Sanitary Inspector/Health Inspector/Health Worker course. The faculty of the Formal Course Centre comprises eminent full time lecturers, visiting professors, and professionals such as Doctors, Civil Engineers, Nurses, Microbiologists, Lab Technicians, Sociologists, Entomologists, and Sanitation specialists from Government, Non-Government and other prestigious institutions. The Formal Course Centre is equipped with Water &amp; Wastewater Laboratory and an extensive library. Since 2011-12, 226 students have graduated from the Formal Course Centre, with 160 having been placed from campus.WASH Institute is undertaking the three year (2020-2023) “Skill Development in Fecal Sludge and Septage Management in India” project supported by USAID which aims to increase the number of skilled professionals in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene sector. This project will reach 2800 government engineers &amp; officials, 1200 sanitary workers &amp; inspectors, 240 students, 320 STP/FSTP Operators, 500 NGO staff involved in FSSM, 60 CSR/Philanthropic staff &amp; Private entrepreneurs.The applied research program at WASH Institute is focused on developing cost effective, low energy, low skill, easy to maintain products for the WASH sector. The Mobile Treatment Unit to treat Faecal Sludge on-site developed by the WASH Institute is currently at an advanced stage poised for commercialization.Technical Advisory ProgramThrough its Technical Advisory program WASH Institute supports national, state, city, and district level governments in planning and implementation of WASH programs and specific solutions. The services range from policy inputs, regulation design, spatial planning, communications planning, engineering design and procurement, business model development, and project management support. Currently, WASH Institute is providing Technical Support to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, on Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban and Rural. In addition, it is also providing Technical Assistance to the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti on Jal Jeevan Mission. Over the years, WASH Institute has also provided Technical support to states such as Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh on SBM-Urban. WASH Institute has also provided the services of IEC Experts to State Mission in Bihar, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh on SBM-G.Since 2014, WASH Institute has been supporting the nodal technical agency of GoI, the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) in developing technical solutions for urban sanitation, including FSM.WASH Institute is also acts as Consultant for Govt. of Andhra Pradesh in Preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), for Implementation of Solid and Liquid Waste Management Projects and Report on ODF Sustainability in the state of Andhra Pradesh.Sector LeadershipWASH Institute has been a sector leader in WASH since its inception by bringing together various like-minded organizations to form networks and scale up impact. In the past WASH Institute has been a key member of the SPHERE network and has worked in close collaboration with local NGOs in the rural water sector.WASH Institute is a founding member of the National Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (NFSSM) Alliance which is a national working group with the mandate to build consensus around, and drive the discourse on Fecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM). WASH Institute was the first Convenor of this alliance and hosted its secretariat for 3 years. The alliance currently comprises 32 organizations across the country. The NFSSM Alliance advocates for scaling up of good quality, inclusive FSM services as part of a larger sanitation initiative across India.The NFSSM Alliance was instrumental in adoption of the National FSSM Policy 2016 in India, which was in turn adopted by more than 20 States across the country.                                                                                                                    Awards and recognition<ul><li>In 2018, WASH Institute was conferred with a National Level Award organized by India Today for “Best Institute on Sanitation Skill Training”.</li><li>The organization has also been honoured with a National Level Award by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India on “Technology Challenge for identifying and promoting solutions for cleaning and maintenance of septic tanks which eliminated the need for human entry”.</li><li>In January 2020, WASH Institute was awarded by FICCI under the Water Initiatives by NGO category.</li><li>HCL Foundation conferred ‘Best Practice Award 2020 on WASH’ to WASH Institute.</li></ul>
