Anemia Free Adolescent

Anaemia is a critical public health problem in India that affects women and children throughout their lifecycles. Anaemia in boys and girls limits their development, and learning ability, reduces concentration in daily tasks, increases their vulnerability to infection, increases school dropout rates, and reduces physical fitness and work productivity. Anaemia in girls during pregnancy is associated with premature births, low birth weight, and peri-natal and maternal mortality.

Adolescence is an opportune time for interventions to address anaemia, as it is an important time of growth and development. Missing out on nutrition education and IFA supplementation at this time may push young boys and girls further into the cycle of iron deficiency and anaemia. In adolescent girls, apart from meeting growth needs, sufficient iron intake is also essential before and during pregnancy.

The main action point will be:

1. Behavior changes communication with Teachers, Anganwadi workers & Adolescents community through IEC, Training and Health education sessions, Hand holding supports etc.
2. Screening of target groups for moderate/severe anaemia and referring these cases to an appropriate health facility.
3. Convergence Convergence with key stakeholder departments like the ICDS, Education Department & Health department for better implantation and increase the coverage of WIFS.
4. Support to National De-warming Day campaign for control of worm infestation.
5. Support to the Health Department for strengthening supply chain management

1. Teachers, Anganwadi workers and teenagers will take iron and deworming tablets on time.
2. The supply chain will be strengthened and iron tablets and registers will be available at all schools and Anganwadi centres.
3. Ownership of Education & ICDS department on WIFS implementation.
4. The Coverage of WIFS will be increased from 60% to 80%.
5. Reduce the prevalence of anemia by 3% per year.
