The number of visually impaired in India today is 12 million, and an additional 6.2 million cannot see because of cataract. This number is bound to increase to 31.6 million by 2020 since a lot of people cannot afford medical treatment.
HelpAge conducts free cataract surgeries to restore the eyesight of the inflicted. Over 50,000 surgeries were done in 2015-16 itself and over 9,00,000 surgeries have been sponsored by the organisation in the past 26 years. It is also important to note that all these surgeries were performed in sterile conditions in the operation theatres of reputed partner hospitals.
