According to a recent survey, there are more than 1000 slums in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Area. The residents of these slums are mostly people who have migrated from other places in search of livelihoods. There is no guaranteed, known and definite source of livelihood leaving them in the lowest economic strata of society. With pitiable living conditions, lack of education, poor hygiene, lack of awareness about nutrition and healthcare and ignorance leading to illegal acts many students do not continue education beyond the 6th standard. The slum children roam around between 4 pm and 8 pm, which is risky for them as they may fall prey to crime, sexual exploitation, and bad habits like liquor drinking etc.

Education is the only thing that has the power to break the cycle of poverty and eventually save children from addictions or prevent them from becoming anti-social elements.

Akshaya Vidya Foundation gathers these children and keeps them productively engaged in studies in AVLCs during the evenings. Methodical and well-planned academics are conducted through digitalized AVLCs and specially designed customised flashcards, other aids, teaching manuals etc. 

AVLCs help in protecting them from the above said negative influences. Children in slums will have access to quality education irrespective of their background and will be able to grow to their full potential and serve the nation. Young girls and boys will be able to get into the field of higher education of their choice or into related obs.
