As per BMC’s 2014 stray dog census, there were around 100,000 strays in Mumbai. Their data also shows that they were 24,290 dogs in 2017. Considering the rapid rate at which stray dogs multiply, there number could be five times from now in the same region, when the next census is completed (will happen in 2019).
The large number of stray dogs and lack of space in Mumbai means that:
(i) There is a lot of conflict between humans and animals, leading to cruelty towards the animals and injuries on humans as well
(ii) Most of these animals are left to fend for themselves, and get subjected to abuse, sickness, injury and suffering. Lack of treatment centers for these animals means that their suffering increases.
(iii) There is not even enough space to incinerate the carcasses of dead animals, so diseases spread easily and rapidly
We are constructing an animal sanctuary in Vithalwadi near Kolad, just outside Mumbai. This facility will have the capacity to hold around 1800 dogs & cats. It will be a major addition to our existing Malad facility which houses 300 animals.
