A children’s centre managed by Jatan Sansthan

Apna Jatan Kendra is a centre run by Jatan Sansthan, with partial support of Gebeco, a German Travel firm. The centre is located at Neemach Kheda Basti, a low-income settlement within Udaipur City. Consisting of approximately 250 households, the settlement is home to the Katputli community (traditional puppeteers), daily wage labourers, domestic helpers, house painters, restaurant helpers, auto-rickshaw drivers and others. The programme is for school children, 5 years and up, until the 8th grade. We currently have 40 children enrolled in the programme. The children study at government schools and come to the centre at 2:30 PM after school hours. They begin the afternoon with a D.E.A.R session (Drop Everything and Read) for half an hour, where they read story books. After this, they are given help with their homework. Additionally, they have creative activities such as arts and crafts, theatre, and gardening and are also taught basic life skills.
