Ashok Nanda is transforming the lives of 350 children with disabilities from backward rural families. Help him

“Most children with disabilities in rural areas lie strapped to their beds with no access to medical care or therapy. Their parents helplessly wait for them to pass away,” says Ashok Nanda, an NGO leader, who has been relentlessly working for disabled children in backward and remote areas of Odisha for over three decades. Many rural families with disabled kids barely survive on rice and can't think of providing even primary care for their children.

In over three decades, Ashok’s non profit organisation Vikash has reached thousands of rural underprivileged children with disabilities and has freed them from the confines of their homes, enabling them to attend schools and live active lives with adequate physical, occupational and speech therapies.

Disabled children in rural areas need your help

"All parents want their kids to be functional, go to school and play with their friends. But most disabled children cannot do any of these things. Rather, they stay confined to their beds. Because of their disabilities, they can't even sit up independently or express their pain. When I meet these children for the first time, I can see the pain and helplessness in their eyes," explains Ashok.

Vikash is the only hope for many such children in rural Odisha. Through its network of on-ground workers, the nonprofit reaches out to parents of disabled children and convinces them to allow qualified therapists to visit the children and conduct a diagnosis of the child's condition and recommend treatment. If needed, the NGO workers also take the child to the health centres to care for other ailments and provide therapy.

End the suffering of poor and disabled children

According to Ashok, most rehabilitation centres are in larger cities, and many parents from rural areas can't even afford bus tickets to take their kids to therapy. "To change children's disability into ability, we need to give them long-term therapy, which is beyond the reach of the families," says Ashok. He believes that changing one child's life can have a domino effect and motivate tens of other parents to bring their kids to rehabilitation centres run by the nonprofit organisation.

“At present, we are barely managing to cover three blocks in rural Odisha. With your support, we can expand our work into 200 blocks. I am confident that if we get the needed financial support, we can fundamentally transform the lives of not just children with disabilities but the lives of their families as well,” Ashok says.

At its centres, the nonprofit provides disabled children with special education, speech therapy and occupational therapy. More importantly, we give these kids a life that they have never experienced. These kids receive special nutrition and an opportunity to make friends and come close to having a normal childhood.

We are taking care of children with disabilities such as hearing impairment, motor disability, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, autism,” Ashok informs.
