Some are forced to drop out of school, while others face uncertain futures without guidance or care. It was in response to this quiet struggle that Ashraya Balikasadanam was born. Run by a group of compassionate well-wishers under the banner of Disha Educational and Charitable Foundation, Ashraya Balikasadanam stands as a safe haven in Payyampally near Mananthavady. It is more than just a shelter—it is a home built on love, care, and dignity for poor and helpless girl children in Wayanad. What began as a small initiative has now become a place where hope is restored and lives are gently rebuilt. During our outreach, we came across heartbreaking realities, especially in areas like Tirunelly, where many families struggle to provide even the most basic necessities. There were young girls and children living without proper care, some on the verge of losing their education, and others silently enduring hardships. When they looked at us with hope, we knew we had a responsibility—not just to help, but to stand beside them. Ashraya Balikasadanam extended its hands, and in return, we received something priceless—their trust and their smiles. Today, Ashraya is home to ten young girls who are now growing up in a safe, nurturing environment. Here, they are no longer defined by their struggles, but by their dreams. Under the care of a trained warden and with the support of dedicated staff including a cook, the children experience stability, affection, and a sense of belonging. The laughter that fills the home today is a powerful reminder of how care and compassion can transform lives.  Care, Dignity, and a New Beginning At Ashraya Balikasadanam, every child is treated with dignity and love. All services provided are completely free of cost, ensuring that no child is denied care due to financial hardship. We provide safe and secure accommodation, nutritious daily meals, clothing, school uniforms, and footwear. Education remains at the heart of our mission, and each child is supported with books, stationery, and guidance to continue their studies with confidence. Beyond basic needs, we focus on the holistic development of every child. Regular health check-ups and medical support ensure their physical well-being, while counselling and emotional care help them heal from past difficulties. We also provide vocational exposure and life-skills education, empowering them to face the future with courage and independence. Understanding the challenges faced by children who have dropped out of school or struggle academically, Ashraya also serves as a supportive space for such children. Special attention is given to those who are irregular in studies or come from difficult backgrounds, helping them regain confidence and reintegrate into the educational system. This journey of care and transformation is made possible through the generous contributions of well-wishers. The running expenses of Ashraya Balikasadanam are supported by people who choose to share their joy—on birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions—by giving these children a reason to smile. ACTIVITY 2 Ashraya Dress Bank and Swapping Centre for tribal Ashraya Dress Bank and Swapping Centre is one of the proud initiatives of Disha Educational and Charitable Foundation, created with a simple yet powerful idea—what is no longer needed by one can become a necessity for another. This project serves as a platform where individuals can donate clean, good-quality clothes that they no longer use, giving them a second life in the hands of those who truly need them. In the remote and underdeveloped regions of Wayanad, many tribal and forest-dwelling communities struggle to access even basic clothing. Recognizing this need, the Ashraya Dress Bank collects contributions from well-wishers and redistributes them with care and dignity to families living in backward villages. The initiative is especially beneficial to vulnerable tribal communities such as the Kattunayika, Kuruma, Kurichya, and Paniya groups, who often face economic hardships and limited access to resources. What began as a small effort has now grown into a meaningful movement. So far, the Ashraya Dress Bank has successfully facilitated the distribution and exchange of nearly 10,000 pairs of clothes. Each contribution not only fulfills a basic need but also restores a sense of dignity, confidence, and belonging among the recipients. This initiative is not just about clothing—it is about sharing, caring, and building a compassionate community. Every donated item carries a message of kindness and solidarity. ACTIVITY 3 Ashraya Vidhya – Lighting the Path of Education In the remote tribal colonies of Wayanad, education often remains a distant dream for many children. Despite their curiosity and potential, they face numerous challenges—lack of academic support, limited access to learning resources, and difficult home environments that make regular study a struggle. Many children fall behind in school, not because they lack ability, but because they lack opportunity. It is in response to this need that Ashraya Vidhya was initiated by Disha Educational and Charitable Foundation. Ashraya Vidhya is more than just a tuition program—it is a bridge between potential and possibility. With a deep commitment to improving the learning standards of tribal children, the project brings education directly to where the children are. Volunteers from the foundation visit tribal colonies once every week, creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment within the community itself. This approach ensures that children who might otherwise be left behind receive the attention and guidance they deserve. What makes Ashraya Vidhya unique is its focus on consistent and quality learning support. Each week, experienced and passionate teachers from different subject areas join the initiative, offering expert guidance to the children. They simplify lessons, clarify doubts, and help students build confidence in subjects that once seemed difficult. Over time, this consistent effort begins to show results—not just in improved academic performance, but also in the children’s growing enthusiasm towards learning. Currently, around 165 tribal children are benefiting from this initiative. They receive free tuition, study materials, and continuous academic support, all at no cost to their families. For many of these children, Ashraya Vidhya is the first structured academic support system they have ever experienced. It not only helps them keep up with their school curriculum but also inspires them to aim higher and dream bigger.  Building Confidence, Creating Futures Beyond academics, Ashraya Vidhya focuses on the overall development of each child. The program nurtures confidence, discipline, and a positive attitude towards education. Children who once hesitated to speak or participate are now more active, curious, and eager to learn. Slowly but surely, education is transforming from a burden into a source of joy and empowerment. The impact of this initiative extends beyond the classroom. When a child begins to succeed in school, it brings hope to the entire family and community. It breaks the cycle of educational neglect and opens doors to new opportunities. Ashraya Vidhya is helping create a generation of learners who are better equipped to shape their own futures and contribute positively to society. This journey is made possible through the dedication of volunteers, teachers, and well-wishers who believe in the power of education. Their time, effort, and support have helped bring meaningful change into the lives of these children. Yet, there are many more children waiting for such opportunities, many more dreams waiting to be nurtured.
