Assam Flood Crisis: The water is gone, but the struggle continues. Help Us Rebuild!

Imagine watching your home fill with water in less than 15 minutes.

When sudden floods struck Upper Assam, water levels surged over 11 feet in minutes. Families were forced onto rooftops through the night, surviving for days on collected rainwater because every local tube well was buried under mud and sewage.

Now, the floodwaters have receded, the short-term food packets are gone, and most external relief drives have packed up and left. But for hundreds of families, the real struggle has just begun. They are returning to homes choked with 3 to 5 feet of heavy silt, with no mattresses, no bedsheets, no cookware, no clothes, and contaminated drinking water. Food aid sustained them for a few days, but you cannot rebuild your life on a food packet.

At Sunbird Trust, our team operates in these remote regions. We don't pack up when the waters go down. Our field teams have been waded deep into affected villages across Sivasagar, conducting detailed, household-by-household ground assessments alongside local villagers and identified 11 severely affected villages. The need on the ground is immense:

• Over 2,000 Households need urgent support to clear thick mud, sanitise flooded rooms, and replace destroyed living essentials like bedding, utensils, hygiene items, and dignity support for women.
• Over 500 Households have had their homes completely flattened and need long-term shelter reconstruction.

While our long-term plan is to support these families with housing reconstruction and sustainable livelihood opportunities so they can fully recover, our immediate focus right now is restoring their basic health, safety, and living dignity.

Rebuilding an entire state takes time and immense resources. But these families cannot wait months while sleeping on damp, mud-choked floors without basic cookware or clean water. We are raising a ₹25 Lakh Emergency Fund to deliver comprehensive living and hygiene kits directly into the hands of the most vulnerable families.

These kits are built based on direct conversations with families on the ground:

• Health & Sanitisation: Heavy phenyl and bleaching powder to sanitise mud-filled rooms and stop disease outbreaks.
• Mud Clearance & Shelter: Spades to dig out heavy silt, heavy-duty tarpaulins, ropes, and torches.
• Living Dignity: Fresh mattresses, pillows, and bedsheets so children and elders don't sleep on damp, contaminated ground.
• Family Needs: Cooking utensils, dry rations, baby food, and essential clothing sets for women.
