Madia and Muria tribes from the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh are among the most vulnerable communities in India. Trapped in the decades-old violence of the Naxal conflict, they have very poor human development indicators and income levels. With an abundance of natural resources and rich traditional knowledge, they once lived a self-sufficient life in harmony with nature, This way of life has been disrupted with time, due to the impact of many external forces, degrading natural resources, climate change, low productivity, and erosion of traditional crops and diversity. As a result, 57% of the population lives on less than 0.4 $ per day, 70% of women are anemic and 50% of children are stunted.

We have identified Climate-resilient Sustainable Farming as a key tool to increase incomes and enable these communities to become self-reliant about food & nutrition. Preserving traditional crops and adopting organic farming practices is a promising and sustainable way to safeguard their livelihood. We have focused on building the capacities and organizing the community as an important approach to achieve this.
Bhoomgaadi, a farmer's collective has emerged out of these efforts through which we are trying to connect their organic produce to market. We work in coordination with the district administration trying to leverage government programs towards creating an eco-system from seeds to market that supports the community to adopt sustainable farming

We believe that the process of bringing in long-term changes in the community is slow and demands patient and sustained engagement. In this process, in our journey so far we have had some small successes which have always encouraged us to continue our efforts further. Some of these milestones are:

Your contribution will directly help us support our cadre of 130 community resource persons working in the villages as change-makers, provide intensive training and capacity building for the farmers, carrying out formalities related to much essential organic certification of farmer's groups, establishing systems for community-level production and exchange of seeds, and providing business development support to Bhoomgaadi

As a part of our efforts to convert Dantewada into 100% organic district, last year 110 villages had passed resolutions to be declared as organic and we had submitted an application to GoI under Large Area Certification (LAC) program. It was a result of traditional tribal wisdom coupled with years of collective efforts. No farmer uses chemical inputs in these villages which cover almost 50% area of the district.
The government had then constituted a high level expert committee to review the application. On 11th October, this committee traveled to Dantewada, visited the field, interacted with the farmers, reviewed the processes followed. In a meeting that followed next day, chaired by the Special Secretory of Agriculture of Chhattisgarh the committee has decided to recommend GoI to certify 110 villages and total area of 65,000 Ha as organic. If remaining formalities go well, this will be the biggest area certified as organic in India under LAC and first of its kind in mainlands. Fingers crossed but hopeful 😊
