Children learn maths, science and languages at school. But where do they learn honesty, empathy and responsibility?

Schools prepare children for examinations. But life asks different questions.

• Will they stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult?
• Will they treat others with kindness and respect?
• Will they be able to handle failure, make responsible choices and build meaningful relationships?

These are not lessons found in textbooks. Yet they shape every decision, every relationship and every future.

For many of us, these values were learnt naturally. Grandparents shared stories that taught honesty. Families spent time together, where respect, gratitude and responsibility became part of everyday life. Communities helped raise children, and learning happened far beyond the classroom.

Today, childhood has changed. Families have less time together. Many children grow up away from grandparents. Much of their free time is spent on screens, where Information is everywhere, but Guidance is not. Children are learning more than ever before, but they are not always learning the values that help them use that knowledge wisely.

That is why value education matters today more than ever.

For over 20 years, Vivekananda Institute of Values (VIVA), Ramakrishna Mission Gurugram, has partnered with schools across India to help children develop the values and life skills that stay with them long after they leave school. Through engaging classroom sessions, teacher training and experiential activities, students build confidence, strengthen resilience, develop empathy and learn to make thoughtful, responsible decisions.

Today, VIVA works with more than 2,000 schools across rural, semi urban and urban India, reaching many first generation learners who have limited access to structured value education.

Every year, more schools request these programmes than we currently have the resources to support.
