Story

Build a Home. Restore Dignity. Transform Lives.

"If you feel love in your heart, you can do anything." - Sister Lucy

Imagine growing old with nowhere to sleep.

Imagine living with mental illness and being forgotten by society.

Imagine losing not only your home, but your name, your dignity, and the feeling that anyone is waiting for you.

This is the reality for thousands of homeless and destitute men across India.

Some have lived on the streets for years. Some have been abandoned because of age, illness, poverty or mental health challenges. Others are elderly couples who have spent a lifetime together, only to find themselves with nowhere safe to call home.

Every person deserves more than survival.

Everyone deserves to belong.

Today, you have the opportunity to help build that place.

About Maher

Maher, meaning Mother's Home in Marathi, was founded by Sister Lucy with a simple but profound belief:

Every human being deserves to be loved, protected and treated with dignity, regardless of religion, caste, gender or circumstance.

Guided by the philosophy of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" ("The World is One Family"), Maher has spent decades restoring hope to people society has too often forgotten.

Today, Maher is a UN registered NGO, that operates 73 Homes in 7 States across India, providing safe homes, education, healthcare, counseling and vocational opportunities for thousands of women, children and men rebuilding their lives.

Maher has helped over 50,000 women, men and children.

For many residents, Maher is not simply a shelter.

It becomes family.

Why This Home Is Needed

Maher is now embarking on one of its most important projects yet.

We are building a new residential home in Ratnagiri, on one acre of land that will provide long-term care, safety and dignity for some of India's most vulnerable citizens.

The new Maher Home will provide permanent accommodation for:

🏠 50 homeless and destitute men

❤️ 6 homeless couples living in extreme poverty and experiencing severe mental health challenges

For many of these residents, this will be the first time in years that they will sleep in a safe bed, receive regular meals, medical care, emotional support and experience the stability of a caring community.

This is far more than a building.

It is a place where forgotten lives can begin again.

What We Are Building

The proposed Maher Home has been thoughtfully designed to provide comfort, dignity, safety and long-term care for every resident. Every space has been carefully planned to create an environment where vulnerable individuals can heal, regain stability and live with dignity.

The new home will include:

🛏️ Two dormitories with 25 beds each, supported by 4 toilets and 4 bathrooms (including a wheelchair-accessible Western-style bathroom), plus a changing room with lockers

🏡 Six private rooms for 6 couples, each with two single beds, a private toilet and bathroom, allowing couples to remain together in a safe and dignified environment

🩺 One recovery room (Sick Room) for residents requiring medical care, complete with an attached toilet and bathroom

🍽️ A dining hall seating 60 people, including residents and caregivers, with dedicated hand-washing and plate-washing facilities

👨‍🍳 A separate dining room for 20 staff members, also equipped with hand-washing and plate-washing facilities

🍲 A fully equipped kitchen, an adjoining grocery store room, and an outdoor utensil washing area to support the daily preparation of nutritious meals

💊 Medicine room for the safe storage and administration of essential medications

🛏️ Linen room for storing bedding, towels and essential household supplies

🧺 Outdoor washing area for laundry and general housekeeping needs

🎨 Recreation room with an attached toilet, creating a welcoming space for social activities, creativity and emotional wellbeing

💼 Office and administration room with an attached toilet to support the day-to-day management of the home

💙 A dedicated counselling room, providing residents with a private, safe space for emotional support, therapy and guidance

👩‍⚕️ Two caregivers' rooms, each with an attached toilet and bathroom, ensuring staff are always available to provide compassionate care

❤️ A separate House Mother's room, with an attached toilet and bathroom, for the resident caregiver overseeing the men's home

🧳 Guest room with an attached toilet and bathroom for visiting professionals, volunteers and guests

🏠 A separate staff quarters, comprising two bedrooms, a hall, kitchen and toilet, providing comfortable accommodation for essential staff

🚿 An outdoor admission bathroom, allowing new residents to bathe and change with dignity upon arrival before entering the home

🕊️ A respectful mortuary room, ensuring residents who pass away are cared for with compassion and dignity

🎓 A training centre, where residents can learn practical skills, receive vocational training and participate in educational and rehabilitation programmes that support greater independence

🏛️ A multipurpose hall accommodating up to 500 people, with two toilets, enabling Maher to host celebrations, community events, training programmes, awareness initiatives and gatherings that bring residents, supporters and the wider community together

🌳 An outdoor healing garden, offering a peaceful space for reflection, recreation and connection with nature

🧱 Secure boundary walls surrounding the one-acre property to ensure the safety and security of every resident

💧 Essential infrastructure, including a borewell for a reliable water supply and an electrical room to support the home's daily operations

Every room, every pathway and every brick has been designed with one purpose: to restore dignity, provide safety and create a place where forgotten lives can begin again.

Our Goal

The estimated cost of constructing this new Maher Home is ₹3 Crore.

This includes developing the one-acre property and constructing a purpose-built residential facility designed to safely care for vulnerable residents for decades to come.

As construction progresses, we will regularly share:

✔ Updated architectural plans

✔ Construction milestones

✔ Progress photographs and videos

✔ Financial updates

✔ Project timelines

Your generosity will help turn architectural drawings into a place that hundreds of people will one day call home.

Accountability & Transparency

Maher believes every donation is an act of trust.

We are committed to using every contribution responsibly and transparently.

Throughout the project, donors will receive regular updates on construction progress, key milestones and how funds are being used.

Our goal is not simply to build a building.

Our goal is to build confidence that every contribution is creating lasting impact.

About Sister Lucy

For decades, Sister Lucy has dedicated her life to caring for those who have nowhere else to turn.

Her work has been recognised with more than 268 national and international awards, including the Nari Shakti Puraskar, the Jamnalal Bajaj Award, and the Leadership Award at the Clinton Global Initiative, among many others.

Yet despite the recognition, her mission remains beautifully simple:

"If you feel love in your heart, you can do anything."

Those words continue to inspire thousands of volunteers, caregivers and supporters who believe that compassion can change lives.

Be Part of a Legacy of Hope

Years from now, no one will remember how much concrete was poured into these foundations.

But they will remember the lives rebuilt within these walls.

They will remember the elderly man who found safety after years on the streets.

The couple who were able to remain together instead of being separated.

The resident who received medical care, friendship and dignity in their final years.

The garden where someone laughed again.

The dining room where strangers became family.

This Maher Home will stand for generations as a place of refuge, healing and hope.

Your donation today becomes part of that legacy.

Every contribution helps bring this home to life.

If you're unable to donate, you can still make a tremendous difference by sharing this campaign with your family, friends, colleagues and community.

Together, we can ensure that no one is forgotten.

Together, we can build more than a home.

We can build dignity, belonging and hope.

With gratitude.
