Call for Action: Support Khaangchu in Advancing Life Opportunities for Tribal Children in Manipur

Who are we and what do we do at Khaangchu?

Education in a modern school was introduced to the Rongmei tribal community in the 1980s. It carried biases that dismissed traditional institutions and knowledge systems as primitive. We are an alternative school, and our approach entails reviving the traditional Khangchu (Morungs) of Rongmei Nagas to establish a culturally responsive, relevant, and community-centric education model. 

What's breaking down right now?

Conventional education invisiblises Rongmei history, identity, and values, leading to irrelevancy, disengagement and poor academic performance.

Our innovative institutions will be community-led, alternative residential schools establishing an ecosystem of relevant education. We are building contextualised curricula to meet the present needs of the tribe by integrating Indigenous knowledge and emphasizing problem-solving skills for challenges in the community. We are committed to decentralized decision-making in curating relevant learning experiences rooted in Indigenous wisdom.  Besides schools, our work with the community is focused on researching and practicing organic farming techniques to leverage the rich natural resources in the region, partnerships with women in the community to advance dignified livelihood opportunities, in order to foster, holistic, sustainable development within the community. 

How are we reimagining education for Rongmei community?

We’ve made incredible progress since our inception in 2024- we’ve consistently recorded over 98% attendance across all programs, have onboarded 6 local teachers and record over 85% parent participation. Throughout this journey, we have been deeply supported by Greenhub India and The Circle India. This year, we also partnered with Nazaria Arts Collective and Canopy Collective to co-create rich, meaningful learning experiences suited to the interests and needs of our children. In 2025, we are dreaming big—with a clear goal: to bring every child in our program up to grade level by the end of the year. We believe that every child deserves the chance to thrive, to learn with joy, and to grow into their fullest potential—regardless of financial background or circumstance. Today, 18 of our 50 children are fully supported by individuals who have chosen to walk beside us. But we need to go further. Many of our children face deep financial challenges—and we believe no child should be left behind because of it.

We invite you to sponsor our children:

1. For 2500 INR you can sponsor a child for a month.
2. For 12500 INR you can sponsor 5 children for a month.
3. For 30000 INR you can sponsor a child for a year.
4. For 1,50,000 INR you can sponsor 5 children for a year
