In India, there is a sheer lack of institutions focusing on education of children with disabilities. Along with adequate infrastructure, there is a dire need of an attitudinal change. Society as well as parents of such children consider them a liability. The society needs to realize that each child has unique abilities and needs. These have to be understood and intervention plans have to be made. Programs and projects have to be dynamic to answer the need of every child.

Vidya Sagar started Centre for Special Education to fulfill the education needs of children with disability. The focus of our centre is school going children with multiple disabilities from various socio economic back grounds. We provide therapy (physiotherapy, speech and alternative augmentative communication training, vision training, occupational therapy and movement therapy), pre-vocational training, counselling, computer training, co-curricular activities such as art library and sports. To ease their lives, we ensure the availability of mobility aids, orthopedic aids, communication aids, specific furniture, and transportation for students.

The quality of life of 150 children (direct beneficiaries) and 650 children (who avail need based services) will definitely improve with our programme. The opportunity to pursue education and training will enable them to have better livelihood opportunities. This will have an impact on their self-respect and increased participation in the decision making in the family and community. We have mainstreamed many of our students and now they appear for class ten and twelve exams. Support us in this cause.
