The gap in the opportunities that children from low income communities- urban and rural is ever increasing because of the inequality in the their basic education.

• Kids in schools struggle to understand and apply basic concepts.
• English is taught as a subject and not a language.
• Teachers know what to teach but do not know how to teach.
• Class is very boring.
• Teachers spend a huge amount of their time in administrative tasks.
• Children who come into schools through the RTE are often considered a burden by teachers.
• Children from these communities do not have enough role models of people from their bastis who have been successful.
• Children do not know of and are not exposed to careers that will be relevant in a few years from now.

Poveda runs:

• An English kindergarten that prepares kids from the urban slums for admission in English medium schools
• After school support classes to bridge the gap that in the learning of children because of 2 years online classes
• Computer classes for kids every Sunday
• Teacher development projects to be able to reach a larger number of children
• Spoken English program in Zilla Parishad schools to prepare students from rural backgrounds to be at par with city kids in colleges and at work.

• Children, especially girls, whose parents would otherwise have enrolled them in the vernacular government schools, have for the past 10 + years been enrolled in English medium schools.
• Children with difficulties in studies are now doing well in school with the after school support
• Children who have never even seen a laptop now are fluent in skills of MS Office
• Children (from grades 5 to 8) who could not even name common kindergarten sight words in their baseline assessment in June 22 are now communicating in complete sentences in English
