According to data from Census 2011, the number of child labourers in India is 10.1 million of which 5.6 million are boys and 4.5 million are girls. A total of 152 million children – 64 million girls and 88 million boys – are estimated to be in child labour globally, accounting for almost one in ten of all children worldwide.
Despite rates of child labour declining over the last few years, children are still being used in some severe forms of child labour such as bonded labour, child soldiers, and trafficking. Across India child labourers can be found in a variety of industries: in brick kilns, carpet weaving, garment making, domestic service, food and refreshment services (such as tea stalls), agriculture, fisheries and mining. Children are also at risk of various other forms of exploitation including sexual exploitation and production of child pornography, including online.
Child labour and exploitation are the result of many factors, including poverty, social norms condoning them, lack of decent work opportunities for adults and adolescents, migration and emergencies. These factors are not only the cause but also a consequence of social inequities reinforced by discrimination.
Children belong in schools not workplaces. Child Labour deprives children of their right to go to school and reinforces inter generational cycles of poverty. Child Labour acts as a major barrier to education, affecting both attendance and performance in school.
Rescue
The Sahyog Care for You outlines all aspects of rescue operations, taking into consideration pre-rescue planning and post-rescue requirements, including victim-friendly actions and gender/child sensitivity. Trains law enforcement agencies and partner organizations on these aspects.
Rescue operations are carried out by the respective Anti Human-Trafficking Units, along with S.D.M Team or its State partner organizations.
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is one of the final elements in the Sahyog Care for You, that involves rehabilitation of survivors of human trafficking. Works with State partners, as well as other Govt departments to help survivors find legally notified, short-term shelters and long term homes that are safe and comfortable.
The survivor rehabilitation process starts immediately after the person is rescued. Sahyog Care for You collaborates with the Social Welfare Departments of the respective states to provide short term shelter for the rescued persons. In case the government shelter is not available, Department refers the rescued persons to shelter home that has been notified by the government.
During the short-term rehabilitation, Sahyog ensures that medical and other support services are provided to the rescued Child as per their needs. Moreover, during the short-term rehabilitation period, actions are being taken to identify the best long-term integration for the survivor.
Repatriation
The Sahyog Care for You Network recognizes that reintegration of survivors into society is critical. While most crimes against women and children are committed away from their homes, repatriation has to happen in a manner and time that ensures they are not returning to a cycle of violence and further victimization.
The Sahyog recognizes that human trafficking is often the result of bad socioeconomic conditions leading to unsafe migration. So after the rescue of Child Labour, repatriation to the place of their origin could well lead to the recurrence of crimes against them, unless proper investigation and precautions are taken.
To prevent a return to a cycle of Child Labour to unsafe migration or trafficking in the first place. Custody of survivors will be passed via a letter of consent, if it is deemed safe for them to return to their family. If the survivor is not able to return to their family, Sahyog collaborates with the Department to arrange long-term accommodation for them.
Sahyog also offering the Child Labour training, education or employment, depending on the person’s age and personal interests. Sahyog have their vocational training centres, so that any child who wants to train him/her self.
