CMC 2020

Everyday more than a thousand patients arrive at CMC desperately seeking medical help but unable to pay for it. Our Founder, Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, started work in Vellore in 1900. 120 years later, her one-bed clinic has grown into a medical college with hospitals on seven campuses. She taught us to care for anyone who knocks at our door. We try to welcome anyone in need, even if they can't afford to pay for their treatment.

Our patients come from all over India. Most of them are financially challenged after spending their life's savings on travel and accommodation to stay Vellore. To help patients like them, CMC’s hospital free bed scheme treats disadvantaged patients free of cost. Everything is covered: bed, nursing, doctor’s fee, lab tests, operation charges and medicines.

In December 1922, Dr. Ida Scudder needed funds to build the Women's Medical College in Vellor. Her team that supported her in the US, launched ‘Dollar Day’, asking 1 million people to give $1 to build CMC! Thousands of students, housewives and ordinary people contributed to ‘Dollar Day’. They raised half their target by what we now call crowd funding. The rest was kindly given by an eighty-year-old lady, Ms. Ellen Scripps, and the Rockefeller Foundation. 

In 2020, CMC marks 120 years of healing. 120 years of caring for those who can’t afford good healthcare. But we need your help. Just like the Dollar Day, we are asking our friends and well-wishers to give something, however small, towards the CMC2020 campaign. Every paise will go to our Hospital Free Bed Scheme, bringing hope and healing to the needy.
