Story

Appeal for funding!

With our intervention with the previous cohort of the Community Cricket Program (CCP) coming to an end in October 2024, Pro Sport Development (PSD) aims to continue its partnership with The Upamanyu Mallik Initiatives (TUMI) and sustain the program’s on-ground activities. In order to do so, we plan to expand the CCP’s outreach and extend it to a cohort of 75 young people (50% girls) from marginalized slum communities in Bhubaneswar for 2024-25, and we need your help!

The CCP will enable these young people to access their fundamental right to play and empower them as confident, competent, gender-sensitive, and socially-aware young leaders, confronting gender norms and advocating for child rights within their schools and communities. Along with a purposefully designed cricket-based program delivered by trained facilitators, the CCP will provide these young people with personal cricket kits, equipment and refreshments during sessions, and access to summer camps to promote their learning through play.

We aim to raise ₹ 10 lakhs to continue our programming with these young people in Bhubaneswar to enable them to benefit from its impact.

This is how you can contribute to the program:

Impact

In 2023-24, the CCP reached out to 62 young people (47% girls) from Bhubaneswar’s underserved slum communities. Over 140 sessions and four exposure opportunities, including the Delhi exposure visit, the Upamanyu Mallik cricket tournament and a leadership workshop, were conducted as part of the program. The program developed leadership abilities and life skills in the participating young people, leading to increased confidence in interacting with diverse stakeholders in public settings. Moreover, the program enhanced the young people’s awareness on pertinent issues of gender and child rights. Additionally, four community cricket ambassadors emerged from the CCP’s previous cohort, and were capacitated to deliver the program.

In September 2023, eight young people from the program, represented India Crocodiles – Team PSD at the Street Child Cricket World Cup (SCCWC) 2023 in Chennai, in order to advocate for the interests of all slum-based young people in Odisha. Moreover, one young person from the CCP was selected to be a part of Street Child United’s (SCU) Young Leader Program.
