Contribute towards income generation program(goat rearing) for the rural community

The main occupation of the people in Karur is agriculture. Only 5% have gone for higher studies. Agriculture depends on monsoon rainfall and if the monsoon fails they have to go to the money lenders and face the brunt of taking the borrowings at higher interest. Ultimately, they face problems in selling their products at a good price, so, they are unable to repay to the money lender. The education of the children is also affected /discontinued. Providing an alternate employment is only the solution for to overcome these problems.

GRAMIUM conducted brainstorming sessions with the community and people suggested goat rearing as a good solution which is manageable by the woman members of the families. Set of (5 Female + 1 Male) goats earn a minimum of Rs.4000/month from the sixth month onwards. 50 families were selected on priority basis. In the total cost of Rs.43500 which includes cost goats, insurance, shed construction and fodder, the beneficiaries will contribute Rs.4000 and the balance of Rs.39500 will be contributed as support from outside. GRAMIUM has good rapport with the community and provide necessary training, guidance and monitoring the activities.

Goat has the ability to survive on little vegetation and grass. Goat farming suits India’s climate and economic situation. The farmer is bringing additional fallow lands under cultivation. It is also helpful in building the real and financial assets through goat rearing. Scientific management practices will increase the yield with less input. In the long run, it will be considered as a mainstream alternative to the conventional agriculture practices.
