COVID-19 Response in Nadia, West Bengal

As COVID-19 ravages India, global and local attention has been primarily focused on major cities, there is a need to focus and direct efforts towards rural India and tier 2-3 populations. 

The District Administration of Nadia is working together with the state government to tackle the challenge head on. 

We, as friends of Nadia want to help their efforts to make Nadia COVID-free.  

What is being done to tackle this:

The COVID-19 Response Working Group for Nadia is working to do the following:

• Establishing 4 PSA Plants to meet local oxygen needs. Each of these will be attached to an existing Government COVID-19 Hospital or Large COVID Isolation Center. Each Unit shall have the capacity to generate 500 Liters of Oxygen per Minute (LPM), to support a minimum of 50 COVID-19 patients.
• Establish and operate 10 COVID-19 isolation centers (one in each Community Development Block in the District). While 2 of these have close to 100 beds each, the 8 remaining centers will have 50 beds each. Each of the Isolation Centers be fitted with Oxygen Concentrators, Oxygen Cylinders, and Pulse Oxymeters, and with other medical supplies and facilities to deal with patients at war footing.  
• Procure 10 Portable Ventilators are required to ensure that seriously/critically ill patients receive adequate life-support while traveling to hospital to receive emergency care. Each of these ventilators will be set up in Government-operated ambulances plying in the District.

How you can help?

The Nadia District COVID-19 Response Working Group requires support to acquire the resources necessary to combat the crisis. All equipment and funding procured will be donated/ granted to the local government hospitals setting up the facilities. They will be operated/utilized by licensed healthcare professionals manning the facilities during the entire pandemic response. Your contributions could support us in:

• Procuring essential medical equipment like Oxygen Concentrators: We currently need 15 Oxygen Concentrators in the immediate term and 60 additional Oxygen Concentrators in the coming weeks.  
• Procuring basic resources like masks, sanitizers, disposable gloves, PPE kits, and bedding: A small contribution could help procure materials such as Oxymeters and other items, essential for the triage and protection of healthcare professionals who will be treating COVID-19 patients admitted at the Isolation Centers.
• Financing water supply, garbage disposal, electricity, sanitation, fire safety, as well as stipends for doctors, nurses, and other paramedic personnel: Smooth operations management is fundamental to ensuring that the quality of treatment at our Isolation Centers is adequate. 

Big goal:

Our preliminary target is to raise USD $25,000 within a week! 

This amount will help procure 15 oxygen concentrators and will help fund essential operations at 3 Isolation Centers.

With your support, we hope to fight a winning battle against the raging public health crisis, and provide much-needed respite to the heavily overworked state-run healthcare infrastructure in Nadia District.

An efficient effort response from the Nadia Administration will help save hundreds of thousands of lives from being lost to the Coronavirus pandemic. Further, the donation of this equipment will permanently improve the quality of healthcare in the District.
