Story
  • The project is aimed at 100 villages and 30000 migrant workers involved in the Mihaan project of Nagpur District. At the time of COVID-19 pandemic situation, the aim is to create mass awareness on COVID-19 pandemic issue as well as to conduct health check-up camps in rural and migrant workers population. The health condition in these areas is comparatively poor and needs more attention from the government as well as non-governmental organizations.
  • The COVID-19 pandemic creates a special challenge due to the paucity of testing services, weak surveillance system and above all poor medical care. The impacts of this pandemic, and especially the lockdown strategy, are multi-dimensional and there is an urgent need to take immediate steps to control the spread and its aftereffects and to use this opportunity to strengthen and improve its primary health care system in rural India.
  • The communication strategy that supports the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine in India seeks to disseminate timely, accurate and transparent information about the vaccine(s) to alleviate apprehensions about the vaccine, ensure its acceptance and encourage uptake.
  • Problem Statement
  • The health care services and systems in India are still developing and have challenges of workforce shortages, absenteeism, poor infrastructure and quality of care. The healthcare system in rural India faces a chronic shortage of medical professionals which is detrimental to the rural health system in terms of the quality and availability of care for rural people. The key challenges in the healthcare sector are low quality of care, poor accountability, lack of awareness, and limited access to facilities.
  • The COVID 19 pandemic creates a special challenge due to the paucity of testing services, weak surveillance system, lack of availability of services which leads to unmet health needs, inability to get preventive services, financial burden, preventable hospitalizations etc.
  • As per the statistics proposed by the WHO, India is the second-highest affected country with the Corona Virus contributing 11.2 million cases approximately. Maharashtra is among the worst-hit states due to covid 19 in India and Nagpur shares a burden of currently more than 1 lakh confirmed cases to date.
  • To support and encourage appropriate uptake of the vaccines by:
  • Managing and mitigating any potential disappointment expressed by unmet demand for the vaccine or eagerness amongst people.
  • Addressing vaccine hesitancy that could arise because of apprehensions around vaccine safety, efficacy; and any other myths and misconceptions.
  • Provide information on potential risks and mitigate unintended crisis (e.g. AEFI clusters, delay in vaccine rollout for certain population categories) during the introduction and rollout.
  • The strategy also seeks to build trust and enable greater confidence in the COVID-19 vaccine amongst all people by employing transparency in communication, while also managing any misinformation and rumours around it.
  • Involving community mobilizers and workers to engage with the community:
  • Spell out the process of immunization (where, how, who, when - date and time) through community consultations, faith leaders and religious meetings
  •  Ensure preparedness through monitoring Emphasize the safety and efficacy of vaccines Engaging youth, civil society organizations, self-help groups, through extensive monitoring
  • Sahyadri Foundation has always aimed to work as a catalyst to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities to advance the common good.
  • There are Four Key Areas that will be addressed as part of interventions under the strategy:
  • Information on the New COVID-19 vaccine: Provide prompt, simple and focused communication on the COVID-19 vaccine(s) and vaccination processes
  • Vaccine Hesitancy: Build public confidence in the safety and efficacy of the new vaccine
  • Vaccine Eagerness: Ensure understanding and acceptance of the phased and prioritized approach to overcome concerns of the population waiting for vaccination
  • COVID Appropriate Behaviours: Maintain and sustain key preventive behaviours: wearing masks, maintaining physical distance and handwashing with soap.
