Covid-19: Differently-Abled Artists Collective (DAAC) Fundraiser

India carries decades and centuries of art, heritage and flourishing creative spaces that have evolved with time to form inclusive platforms of varied means of expression. 

Sadly, the creative industry in the country is still reeling from the crass effects the pandemic has had on it. The creative economy sectors in publishing, broadcast, advertising, performing arts, crafts, film, and others contribute to national GDP, but studies suggest that the formal and informal creative economy has contracted already by 16% as of March, 2021.

According to an impact study by UNESCO, it is estimated that an overall US$750bn contraction of the gross value added by cultural and creative industries has been experienced globally in 2020. Losses in revenue in the cultural and creative industries in 2020 are also particularly significant, ranging between approximately 20 to 40% across different countries. 

While collective data captures the hurdles and difficulties of able-bodied people, it is known that these effects ripple when it comes to differently-abled individuals. Taking this into account, United Way Chennai has kickstarted a campaign to help boost the differently abled artist community across Tamil Nadu. 

While the creative economy has been amongst the worst hit during the pandemic, differently abled people have been extremely vulnerable towards the sudden change and overturning of the healthcare system. Needless to say, artists who are differently-abled are facing massive setbacks. 

Through this fundraiser, United Way Chennai aims to empower, facilitate and provide funds to reignite creative spaces for the differently-abled community. Your donations will reform and bring to life a collective that strives for a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
