“We rescued a 9-year-old girl who had run away from her home to escape sexual abuse from her biological father. I can only imagine the extent of suffering the innocent child might have gone through to leave her safe space, her home. And what was the most shocking thing is that even her mother did not save the child and brushed the abuse aside. There are hundreds of such girls who end up on streets or on railway platforms with no one in the world to keep them safe”, says Deepali Vandana, co-founder of Urja Trust, a charity organisation that provides a safe shelter to homeless girls..

The plight of homeless girls

“The mistreatment of girls is rampant and can be seen everywhere, especially in small towns and villages. The only reason why women and girls escape from their homes and come to bigger cities is in search of some relief from abuse, exploitation, and discrimination. But as soon as they land at railway stations and bus stands they realise that they have become easy prey for abusers,” says Deepali. 

Homeless women and girls have no safety or protection. They struggle to even find a space to sleep in. This is where Urja Trust steps in and takes these help girl under their care.

“In the last ten years, we have provided safe spaces and nutrition to over 1,500 girls and have provided support for their physical and mental well-being,” adds the NGO founder.
