Donation for Plastic and Solid Waste Management

Waste management is one of the biggest challenges that the whole world faces. In front of us the major challenge is to manage the menace of mountains of waste properly which is generated daily due to the increasing and mandatory use of vegetable stalks, fruit peels, leftover food to plastic bags and other items like paper, cloth, glass, paper etc.

The waste management problem in the whole world is going to become very complicated and is taking a very serious turn. There are piles of garbage everywhere in the city as well as in the villages. The stray animals consume the plastic waste which impacts their health. Large-scale waste generation and improper management of waste have led to health problems as well as pollution of air, water and land, causing environmental degradation in many ways.

Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra works tirelessly to resolve the Waste management issue in Chiplun and surrounding areas.

Following programs are undertaken regarding plastic and solid waste management in Chiplun and surrounding areas.

1. We collect plastic waste from Chiplun and Kherdi market daily, twice in a week from Khed and weekly from 8 other villages. Citizens providing plastic are paid Rs. 5 per kg
2. We collect milk bags regularly from various tea-stalls and hotels. Plastic bottles are also collected from the installed Sustainability Cages
3. We conduct an activity named 'My Sustainable Corner' in schools to generate awareness among students for sustainability. Plastic collection drives are also conducted in the schools.
4. The collected plastic from different sources is then segregated into 7 types of plastic and sent for further recycling or upcycling depending on the type of plastic.
5. We also support multiple housing societies with direct waste management and households with home composting units.
