Embroidering a future: Training/Capacity Building (of adolescent girls with disability and women in the family) for Livelihood Project in Marginalised Community Settings

Girls and young women with disabilities face double discrimination in society because of the gender bias and their impairment. In resource-poor settings , additional layers of disadvantages associated with poverty add on. A girl child transitioning into adulthood in the marginalized settings is not prioritized in the family and may often be neglected at times in the efforts to meet special needs as well as the general needs for health, nutrition, education, communication ,employment and more as she is seen as a non- contributory member , with the stereotypical attitude of society adversely affecting her future.

CARENIDHI community Initiative for Zardosi and embroidery crafts in N.E.Delhi and E.Delhi is a grassroots venture to facilitate livelihoods and self-reliance through training and skill development in the locally popular crafts with a focus on embroidery, zardozi and tailoring, along with non-formal education and capacity building towards lifeskills, livelihoods and income generation.

Through this initiative, we wish to create opportunities for the young women with disabilities to feel included in the community, showcase their abilities, become active partners in contributing to the family income and lead a life with dignity. The training and capacity building for self-employment in this phase will make a difference to the the lives of these girls. By adding non formal education and basic computer literacy to their training, we can enhance their opportunities for livelihoods and a better life.
