Story

The most critical drivers for a just and equal society are, We The People - the citizens of India. Citizens who understand constitutional rights and duties, and who use these to resolve problems, improve communities, and lead better lives. In the run-up to our 75th Republic Day, our aim is to educate and engage 75,000 active citizens.

To achieve this, we are building capacities of Constitution Champions, who will work in their communities, conduct workshops, share materials and methods, guide other citizens, participate in local governance, and help each other to be active and responsible citizens.

This fundraiser is part of our project to scale up constitutional awareness and empower citizens. Join us on this mission and bring a lasting change in the lives of people of India.

Plan for this year

We plan to reach out to 75,000 citizens through training 150+ Constitution Champions from different regions of the country. Our training ‘Constitution for Citizen Action’ imparts knowledge of constitutional and legal provisions, develops skills to work on individual and community issues while upholding constitutional values. Alongside, we are building an online platform through which, the Constitution Champions and citizens, can access resources and support for continued learning and action.

Impact in the last 2 years

Hasmukh Bhai: Citizen Champion from Gujrat

"When I was conducting a session, a woman head sarpanch did not consider herself equal to the other authorities and would not take her assigned seat. As I was aware of the values of equality and justice because of the training I attended, I told her that she holds a Constitutional position and that under the Gujarat Panchayat Act, she is not inferior to other government authorities. After some more sessions, she now sits at the Panchayat meetings and is actively involved in the development work of the village."

Poonam: Citizen Champion from Uttar Pradesh

"I have been working with adolescents and youth for over 8 years and I have always wanted to understand constitutional values so that I can better connect with the community. I went through the training and gained a detailed understanding of the Constitution which made my work more effective. Now while conducting my sessions, I have shifted the method by encouraging the group members to read the Preamble instead of just me reading it. They are much more involved in the discussions and expressed interest in applying Constitutional values to the issues that affect them”

Asungba: Citizen Champion from Assam

"After the training, I realised that the Constitution gives us the freedom to practice our religion in whatever way we want. Now I know that I have the right to choose my religion and practice it the way I want. In one of our Bible services, I prayed for our authorities and I also shared that as good citizens, we should be aware of our duties and follow certain rules laid down by our authorities."

Nilesh Khanvilkar: Citizen Champion from Maharashtra

“After my training with We, The People Abhiyan, I understood the importance of Constitutional awareness and how vital it is to inculcate this knowledge to people from all walks of life, through various forms of media. The training encouraged me to initiate Constitutional awareness in my own capacity.”
