About Bhartiya Mahila Evam Gramin Utthan Sansthan (BMGUS)

Bhartiya Mahila Evam Gramin Utthan Sansthan is a social development organization that has been actively working in Eastern Uttar Pradesh since 1995.

With over 25+ years of experience, the organization is dedicated to empowering marginalized rural communities, focusing on children, youth, adolescents, and women. Its initiatives include women's empowerment, education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, and community development.

The organization collaborates closely with individuals, government bodies, Panchayati Raj institutions, and development partners at national and international levels. Key collaborators include PATH, AED, World Vision, NABARD, and Jivdaya, working together to create sustainable opportunities and improve the lives of these communities.

Mission: To break the cycle of poverty through education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihood initiatives.

The Problem

In the remote district of Basti, Uttar Pradesh, children from SC and OBC communities face a harsh reality. According to the 2023 ASER report by PRATHAM, 12.6% of children drop out after Grade VI. A survey conducted for around 100 families in Hasni and Chota Karma in the district of Basti, the dropout rates are as high as 84%.

Despite schools in these villages, the distant location of junior high schools, combined with inadequate resources and teaching methods, contributes to high dropout rates. Without the support of family or community, these children often fall into child labor or early marriage, perpetuating the cycle of poverty and exclusion.

Our Solution: Utthan Fellowship

Short Term: We will engage local youth Fellows to teach in community learning centers, bridging the gaps in education and preventing dropouts. These Fellows will also work with families, raising awareness about the importance of education and collaborating with community leaders, local organizations, and government bodies to improve access and resources.

Long Term: Fellows will become advocates for change, building alliances with organizations and government agencies to address the underlying issues of marginalization. Together, we aim to break the cycle of poverty by making education a priority in these communities.

  • Morning: Community mobilization through awareness campaigns and parental engagement to prevent and eliminate dropouts.
  • Afternoon: Bridging learning gaps by teaching in learning centers to ensure children reach their grade-level proficiency.
