Campaign by United Way India
BACKGROUND
India, a land of rich diversity and cultural tapestry, is witnessing a growing movement towards inclusivity and recognition of the LGBTQIA+ community. However, despite legal advancements like the decriminalization of homosexuality, the community still faces significant challenges in accessing equal opportunities, particularly in the realm of employment and entrepreneurship. Despite these challenges, the LGBTQIA+ community in India demonstrates immense entrepreneurial potential. A 2020 study by NASSCOM Foundation: https://www.nasscomfoundation.org/ found that 14% of LGBTQIA+ individuals are already entrepreneurs or self-employed.
The LGBTQIA+ community often confronts societal prejudices, discrimination, and limited access to resources that hinder their economic progress. Through this project, we aspire to provide a platform where individuals can not only overcome these challenges but also thrive by channeling their creativity, skills, and aspirations into sustainable entrepreneurial ventures.
PROJECT RATIONALE
In our commitment to fostering inclusivity and equal opportunities, our project aims to address the specific challenges encountered by the LGBTQIA+ community in India through entrepreneurship and self-employability initiatives. Named GARIMA: Empowerment Through Entrepreneurship and Self-Employability, this program seeks to establish a supportive ecosystem that promotes economic independence, eliminates discriminatory barriers, and drives entrepreneurial success among LGBTQIA+ individuals.
