Empowering Tribal Artisans through The Rural Mall: Skills, Markets, and Sustainable Livelihoods

In the tribal belts of Gujarat, hundreds of artisans and rural producers possess rich traditional skills in bamboo craft, forest-based products, and local food processing. Yet, despite their talent, most remain excluded from formal markets, earning low and irregular incomes due to limited exposure to changing consumer preferences, poor product finishing, and lack of access to organized retail platforms.

Through Visdaliya – The Rural Mall, a community-owned and community-led initiative by BookForChange Foundation, we have begun bridging this gap. The Rural Mall connects artisans directly to urban consumers by showcasing their products in premium spaces such as the Surat International Airport and many tourist spots, ensuring fair pricing and eliminating middlemen.

Today, over 500 tribal households, especially women—are part of this initiative. However, with rapidly evolving market expectations, there is an urgent need to upgrade their skills in design, quality, finishing, and packaging to remain competitive and scale their incomes.

This fundraising campaign aims to strengthen artisan capacities through structured training, design innovation, and enterprise support. By investing in skills and market readiness, we can transform traditional craftsmanship into sustainable livelihoods—enabling rural communities to earn with dignity, preserve their heritage, and build resilient futures.
