Enabling Vulnerable Children to Flourish

Education is easy for all children in Maharashtra and many receive little or no education. One of HWCT aims is to help make schooling available to as many children as possible, enabling them to fulfill their potential goals and in turn, help their communities to become sustainable.

We are developing links between children, staff and parents in local Schools in Mumbai and Rural Maharashtra, providing support for teachers and children. Our ambition is to help forge direct, long-term links between schools and foster to generating opportunities in the Rural Areas.

Our enthusiasm and support for Rajtalati Rural School was initiated by the determined approach we received from the principle Mr. Sanjay Chawan. He invited us to visit the school where he also heads as one of the school faculty. he had established the school for a group of children he had found sheltering under a mango tree. We were captivated by his energy and ability to get things done. Rajtalati School is one of the 22 schools, where HWCT works in hand to hand with its volunteers and supporters to ensure that the schools remains operational for the children. 

Working with the local community and with support from various donors, we obtained quotations, financed, and enabled the installation of lights, fans, gas connection – a small step that has led to big changes for the school and, of course, the students. The Fan and Lights & Gas with Stove arrangements mean that twice as many children are now receiving education and the Gas connection has helped the school staff to use gas instead of cooking food by burning wood. This has helped school saving time and reducing the pollution due to smoke. The nutritional guidance to the school and parents also help children have nourished food giving nourishment for their bodies as well as their minds. In April 2019 there was a role call of 188 children and 11 teaching staff, which has shown the increase of 28% in the number compared to past year.

There is more to be done, there is requirement of the water filter, re-building of the washrooms and repairs to the dilapidated building to keep operational during the monsoons. Recently, repairs for two classrooms were completed with community support, to expand the school in order to accommodate additional students.

Shortage of money is a perennial problem for Rural Schools and HWCT has provided funding to kick start with the children’s basic educations. HWCT’S support to the school has proved it can rise to the task of supporting the children of its community and now wants to take the next step to be recognized by the authorities and become the Digital School at par with the other schools

In a world of inequality where poverty, disease and homelessness are the norm for so many, HWCT INDIA aims to help orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) and their communities to create sustainable conditions in which they can flourish and where communities can learn to support themselves. Working with project partners on the ground in Rural Maharashtra, our activities focus on the areas of Digitalization, Education, Health and Nutrition.

HWCT aims to bring change to the Rural areas by generating the opportunities for children who wish to pursue their education and help them decide their caireer to bring a sustanable change and dignity to their life, creating further opportunities and set an example in their local communities to follow the goals to prosperity.
