Ensure SAFE childcare and help women JOIN the workforce: With Rs 1,800, help START a Community Childcare Centre in urban poor slums of Mumbai

In urban India, only 24.5% women aged 15 and above participate in the workforce. Research correlates the presence of young children in homes with lower female labour force participation. Apnalaya's recent study (2021) in an urban slum at Shivaji Nagar, Mumbai, suggested unpaid work at home as the primary reason for the female labour force participation to be at a mere 16.8%. 

Apnalaya’s Community Childcare Centre (CCC) model in urban slums is a social enterprise that supports women in rebuilding and exploring business opportunities, while providing affordable childcare. Apnalaya trains women as entrepreneurs, who provide home-based affordable childcare so more women in their communities are able to seek employment. Each CCC supports six women and four children. At present, 53 CCCs are functioning, providing childcare for 276 children and helping 285 women stay in the workforce.
