ERADICATING DEVADASI SYSTEM IN BELGAUM THROUGH EDUCATION

The Problem: A Legacy of Exploitation

The Devadasi system, a deeply entrenched tradition in India, traps young girls, primarily from Dalit communities, into a life of servitude and often, sexual exploitation. Despite being outlawed in 1982, an estimated 48,000 Devadasis remain in Karnataka alone, with 144,000 children born into this system. These children face a harsh reality: extreme poverty, illiteracy, social stigma, and vulnerability to child marriage and trafficking.

Parasuram's Story: A Spark of Hope

Parasuram’s story and growth is a perfect example of the transformative power of education. Born into a Devadasi family, his future seemed predetermined and bleak. However, thanks to Mahila Abhivruddhi Mathu Samrakshana Samasthe (MASS), a local NGO, Parasuram's life took a different turn.

MASS provided Parasuram with access to quality education at their child learning center. Financial support through scholarships, along with mentorship from dedicated individuals like Dundavva, empowered him to overcome academic challenges and persist in his pursuit of higher education. Parasuram's story transcends his own success. Fueled by a desire to help his community, he became a child educator, paying forward the knowledge and support he received.

MASS: Breaking the Cycle

MASS operates in Belgaum district with a two-pronged approach: eradicating the Devadasi system and uplifting ex-Devadasis and their children. Recognizing education as the key weapon against this system's revival, MASS established a network of Child Activity Centers across Belgaum. These centers provide:

• Free Education: Combating school dropouts and ensuring access to quality education for vulnerable children from ex-Devadasi and Dalit communities
• Preparation for Higher Education: Training for entrance exams to prestigious Moraji Schools, opening doors to further academic opportunities.
• Enhanced Learning Resources: Libraries and resources specifically catering to the needs of older students (11th and 12th grades).
• Financial Assistance: Connecting children with government scholarships and loan programs, reducing financial barriers to education.
• Career Guidance and Skill Development: Equipping youth with the tools and knowledge to navigate career paths and build a brighter future.

Investing in the Future: A Call to Action

MASS seeks funding to establish 12 additional Child Activity Centers across Belgaum and this will help around 360 students.
