Aadhiyan Nomadic people indulge in begging, even resorting to practices like beating their own bodies with whips. Nestling hunters, blabbering fortune tellers, street circus players and Narikkuravar gypsy tribal community goes begging with their children. Narikkuravar Tribe hunts squirrels and birds and sell them for making a living. Children are not sent to schools and they eventually pick up begging. Our mission is to help children from these backwards areas receive proper education so that they can lead better, healthier lives.
• Their Children
People in these backwards areas use their children for begging, and after the child turns 5, he is left to fend for himself.
They do not attend school as they have no way to get there. Boys and girls have limited access to clean clothes and food and many have sores from sleeping on the streets and from playing naked. when young girls reach puberty, they are married off.
• Their Adults
The adult members use cheap alcohol to suppress hunger. What’s more, there is no awareness about the harm alcohol consumption causes. 99% of the adults from the community are unable to read or write. No one has any savings to pay for education.
• Their Women
The women are primarily beggars, child bearers and home keepers. Girls get married very early. They suffer from anaemia and die during child-birth because of ill health. No birth control measures are taken to prevent pregnancy. Women give their earnings through begging to their husbands, which means they are left with no money for themselves. They can be forced into drinking by their husbands and they become addicted easily. There is a horribly high level of domestic violence towards women, which is largely fuelled by alcohol addiction.
Community Action, Development, Liberative and Education (CANDLE) is a registered, grass root level NGO established in 2003 and registered under the Indian Trust Act, FCRA Act, Income Tax exemption Act in 80G and 12A and is committed to the upliftment of the disadvantaged community of women and deprived and marginalized children. The Aadhiyan Nomadic tribe and the Narikkuravar manufactures tribe beads, safety pins, hooks, strings etc and indulges in hunting mongoose, nestles, squirrels, birds, rabbits etc. and sells them for their survival. We are also working for the empowerment of lepers, the Kuravar tribe, quarry workers and Dalits in Pudukkottai District, Tamilnadu, India.
We are aiming at enrolling poor children into schools. Evening educational coaching to poor children on reading, writing and extra-curricular activities shall be provided.
These deprived poor children will never roam about the streets for begging again. They will attain quality education, will learn to read and write. The girl children shall be able to continue their education and cases of early marriage will reduce.
